I found a copy of "Die Wehrmacht" last weekend which had some nice color photos of Gran Sasso.

Is that the flipped half of a splinter FG42 bando on his back?

          Hi Willi,

          very nice pics !

Agree it's a Medic bag and the carrying bag back look to be a late war medic bag back.

            Medic pack and MP40.
Not so conventionnal with Geneva convention.
            Very interesting.

Mathieu, could that back pack just be one of the late fur covered rucksacks? I saw a standard rucksack recently in all tan with the red lines.

The last FJ is not on top of the mountain with the others in the first few photos. He is with a large bunch who appear to have secured an access point, and not by the tram entrance.

                  Nice pictures!
I think #3 shows a splinter grenade bag.

Ah, but does carrying something with medical supplies and nothing else identifying him (or any soldier) as a medic, make him a medic?

                          Thanks for the photos, Willi.
The last one was taken in the airdrome of Pratica di Mare, moments before taking off towards Campo Imperatore. I´d even dare to say that the Fallschirmjäger is Gerhard Opel. If this is the case, he was not a Sanitär...
On the other hand, Dr. Brunner was the medic attached to the group storming Gran Sasso. He is shown in a couple of photos of the report made by Schneiders/von Kayser, and he did not wear helmet, either MP 40. The man on your photo doesn´t seem to be him.
Finally, the man with the FG 42 bando is Karl Schulze, one of the officers who travelled with Mors by truck till reaching Assergi.
                          Best regards.
