This is for me one of the best I ever did. This cave is located about halfway between the Albaneta and the Monastery of Montecassino. It still exists today, even if it has been enlarged in the years for make big the path.

I Know This Place Too !

Secondly, I wanted to ask you if the location in the picture may possibly be the site of an old (late 1970's) discovery of German weapons, ammunition, and equipment? Many years ago, when I lived in Italy in the early 1980's, I remember hearing a story about a German "cave bunker" that became exposed when the land around it crumbled in a land-slide. Since the particular location in your photograph has been extensively excavated, I thought that maybe this was the original site of the discovery. I don't know if this story had any basis in fact or if it was only a collecting "legend"
Maybe you have heard this story too?

Hello Greg:
I try to give an answer with my not perfect English: I hope you understand. The story is true: in the late 70s, the Italian Electricity Company did work very close to the Albaneta farm (about 500 meters away from the cave in the picture) and, during this work, a part of the floor and the terrain very close collapsed, giving access to underground which until then had been blocked by rubble. Was found in the basement: mines, mortar bombs, hand grenades, food, ammunition of all types and weapons. A week of works by Italian Army specialized personnel was necessary to clean the entire area.
Other depots was found on Hill 575 (a cave with bombs and some german bodies).
A lot of bombs and ammunitions was founs also during the works on Castle Hill in the late '90s.
Last body found in the area was two polish soldiers two years ago.
Regards
Marco

If the clean-up job had been given to the members of the FJ forum, it would have taken only a few hours to clean out everything!
No, seriously, thank you for the clarification. You always share very interesting details. My curiosity is satisfied!
