Looks like a bullet or smal splinter hit.

It looks like a hole made by a small shell or grenade fragment.

Having done tests on helmets earlier in my career,I would day this was done by a heavy low velocity projectile from a weapon such as a 45cal thompson or 9mm sten as they make that definite puNch out of material as shown

At what range? Do you have any pictures of the tests that you preformed on helmets, what sort of helmets did you use?

RANGES where standard for the weapon less than 100 metres. I used mainly com bloc lids and the US steel pot.
There was a consistant punch out effect for these low velocity rounds with the 45 cal showing the most hit power also the soviet pistol ammo as used in the PPSH41 was similar.
Sorry I am long retired now and the pics are archived or gone .

Maybe it will be interesting: this helmet was found (about 1985-1987 years) in Pillau, Koenegsberg (now - Baltijsk, Kaliningradskaja oblast)

That's interesting. What FJ units were in Pillau?

Did you do any tests with schrapnel? Because I am pretty sure that is shrapnel damage, considering the irregularity and small size of the hole. Also, statisticaly, most helmets are damaged by shrapnel, bullets are the exception.
I would also like to say that US helmets and German helmets react quite differently to impacts.

no tests with shrapnel as there would be no way to professionaly conduct one in our area.
I must say with this helmet you can see the round punch out quite clearly and I do not think shrapnel would react this way and as I said the damage is consistant with my tests fee world just my opinion
