What do you guys make of this ?

Very interesting looking medallion, Eric. I've never encountered anything like that myself at least not as far as German items go.

The only comparison that comes to mind are some privately purchased "memorial plaques" awarded to British soldiers, or more often officers. Apparently these were commissioned by the family in memory of the fallen, usually for display in the family home. I've personally seen various examples from the Boer War and both World Wars.

I'd think it likely that German families, especially those that could afford to, also had "memorials medals/plaques" made to commemorate the fallen.

Do you know anything about this soldier? If one could discover something of the family history it might shed some light on this interesting piece.

By the way, just curious to know what the dimensions are? Is it sterling?

Nice piece indeed, thanks for sharing.

    Cheers,

    Adam

      Adam,

It is listed as a Cupro-Nickel ( not silver ) and the size in 41mm.

It is an interesting piece that certainly looks like it could be real.
