Fallschirmjäger Regiment 2 ?

I received info from Volkbund on a family member and they say he was with the 9.Fllsch.Jg.R.2. That is the 2nd Fallschirmjäger regiment? The only reason why I am asking is because of the 9. If it is the 2nd Fallschirmjäger regiment what does the 9 mean? Thanks.

most likely means 9 Kompanie FJR2.

The 9. with the 10 th, 11 th and 12 th (Heavy) Coy belonged to the III (3rd) batallion of the Regiment. Each regiment counted 3 Bn's + regimental Units like Tankdestroyer - Mortar - engineer
Coy 1 - 4 formed the I Bn
Coy 5 - 8 formed the II Bn.
So in the division there were THREE 9.Coy's (because it counted THREE regiments), that's why the regiment is always mentionned
To make things a little more complex, the logic numbering between the regiments isn't always followed ( for example)
1 FJDivision : Rgt 1 - 3 - 4
2 FJD Rgt 2 - 6 (later 23th) - 7
3 FJD Rgt 5 - 8 - 9
4 FJD Rgt 10 - 11 - 12
