It appears that the repair was done by taking the liner out and pounding the dent out from the inside. When I purchased the helmet from the vet he indicated that this was the condition of the helmet when he picked it up.

Such a sloppy stitched seam on original liners is close to what TR Germans called Wehrkraftzersetzung (is that word translateable )
