      Hi,

Believe it or not, but several years ago I bought a wartime copy of that picture, a picture taken from almost a similar angle, for 25 euro.
This isn't ancient history, it is 5 or 6 years ago and I sold that picture for the same amount to another collector for the same amount.
One thing is sure: I'am a bad business man!

      Succes with photo collecting.

Sorry Bill, but I wasn't "on-line" when I had that picture.

It's a fairly recent development at the 'bay. NOt sure if all auctions are treated that way, or only those of a certain $$ amount.

              Hi everyone,
Everyone does with his money whatever he wants, but I keep on thinking that there is an "strange atmosphere" regarding that quite odd auction. Too much money for such a photo...
Furthermore, I don't think it's the "Photo", the paradigmatic photo for everyone interested in Eben Emael. As many of you have already stated, there are similar photos, which are already known and published. Bill Petz has three wonderful similar shots. In Milan Blum's book "Der Überfall (Band 1)", it appears another similar photo on page 127 (showing the same: Cup Nord, glider #4, #11, #8, #9, #10 and Baraquement Graindorge).
              Best regards. Óscar.

Collecting photo's is an interesting & specialized area. I've been collecting photo's for a short time, maybe 2 years. In that time I've noticed how certain subjects command a higher price to own, as you would expect. Personally, I think paying that amount for an FJ photo is way over the top regardless of the battle it was taken at. As mentioned earlier by several other members, there are other similar original photos of the same subject out there that changing hands for much less, there are FJ albums selling for much less but, this isn't about rarity as much as it is desirability. Now I don't condem anyone paying what ever they want for an item, I've payed too much for quite a few item's just for the privalege to have them in my collection. I collect photo's that relate to New Zealanders in WW1 & NZer's in the LRDG during WW2. I know of an NZ LRDG photo album that was sold to a UK collector for around US$8000.00. To put things into perspective, there were approximately 250,000 FJ's that served between 1939-45 ( a lot of them with camera's ), there were less than 350 NZer's that served with the LRDG between !940-45. My point is, if your going to pay a huge amount for an individual photo you want to be absolutely certain that something similar isn't going to turn up in the near future.
I feel pretty safe collecting photo's of the LRDG because they are rare & unique. FJ photo's I don't believe are rare as much as they are desirable by many collectors & thats why so many get caught up in bidding frenzies.

Where did you find that number of FJ?

Mike39 on the total number of FJ serving, would that not go back to say 1935/36.But the war years i had wanted to know,as shure i had not seen the info yet.Like did see something maybe on a site now, saying there where 150,000 that served.Or maybe that was the number late in the war(would need to check and find that info if i can),that served.

And killed in action i had herd or saw 50,000+ killed in WW2,is that maybe the info you may have too.Like this info you got could you say where you got it thanks?.

David, the photograph is not unique. I have an almost identical photograph that I bought for 60 euros a year ago.

It will be very interesting to see what impact the high price paid by Patrick for this photograph will have on prices in the future for photographs of Eben Emael in general and those that show DFS 230 gliders in particular.

                    What do others think?

                      Hello Yves,

As a collector, the increase in prices being paid for photographs relating to the fortress of Eben Emael and the three bridges over the Albert Kanal are of concern. Personally, I have become more selective when purchasing photographs for my collection.

In the past I have purchased many photographs in order to aid my research into the activties of Sturmabteilung Koch. The high price some photographs sell for today makes it hard to justify the purchase of photographs purely for the purpose of research.

However, from an investment point of view, it is pleasing to see the high prices others are prepared to pay!

Incidentally, since Patrick purchased the photograph that is the subject of this thread, I have received emails from several collectors wishing to sell items relating to Eban Emael and/or Sturmabteilung Koch, no doubt hoping to cash in on the present frenzy.

                      Best wishes,

                      Ian

                            Foto FEE gliders

                            Hello all of you,

First I would like to say that I do not feel that I have to defend myself for paying the mentioned amount for the foto of the gliders landed on the forteress of Eben Emael.

I was the first who saw the foto on Ebay. Other buyers who now give negative comments made high biddings on this foto to overbide me. What if they would have overbid me and would have won the foto for perhaps € 1.000.

Also, somebody states that he has bouht a similar foto for € 60. When was that. In the same week that I won the foto 2 fotos from glider 9 were bougt for around € 400. One by Spokey and one by Sudek. So, fotos like these for
€ 60, I do not think so. It would be nice also for me.

Also, somebody says that the foto is not unique. In my opinion it is, namely a second Fiseler Storch can be seen nearby the Graine D'orge. I never saw a foto with 2 fiseler storchs on FEE.

I habe a large collection with fotos of FEE. The last years buyers like Spokey and Sudek often wone very beautiful fotos. And often also for high prices. I often saw these fotos first and often Spokey and Sudek overbid me. I want to make clear that I respect this. That's live, that is Ebay. However, in this case I wanted to win also a foto like this. Believe me, I have to work hard for my money but I repeat: several potential byers also are the cause for this price. Then please also give comments on this. Also often new accounts on ebay are seen with often only one goal: increase the price. Now that I have won, I am the person to blame. Sorry guys, but I hope you understand my point of view.

Also somebody says that I made biddings on fotos of gliders. My question to this person(s): what about yourself? Is it not allowed to do this?

I want to make clear that I also do not want to pay so much money for these fotos. But just as you I am a collector and FEE is a hugh part of my live just as my collection thus.

I hope you understand my point of view and also hope that it is not only me to blame that fotos are sold for high prices.

All the best and good hunting.

                              Hello Patrick,
Thank you for having the courage to step up to the mark

I agree you are entitled to spend the money you earn on exactly what you
want. If this was a 'buy it now ' item and you stepped in at 1000 euro, that
would be feeding the frenzy, however, as you siad, you were not the only
bidder, which forced up the anti.

Its each to his own, enjoy your purchase.

                              John.

Fair comment Patrick & I respect your reasons for wanting to own this photo. The competition is obviously high with FEE & therefore the privilege to own these item's comes at a high price.
