Inside the smock; that was the whole point of having this item of uniform to ensure that it covered everything so that nothing could get hooked up on the shroud lines of the parachute.

And because the fieldgear causes bulges when the jumpsmock is worn over it, you have the explanation why the smock was nicknamed "Knochensack" - bone-bag.
