Not really my field, but I think I saw a pair of early FJ boots with sort of waffled/checkered pattern soles instead of the gull pattern..., am I right ?

No John, but member Giel has a really nice photo for sale here on E-stand and one sitting guy wears a pair like this..,I was just checking my eyes...

I think they have the early hats with totenkopf button on front and eagle on the side..pic is 1940 IMO.
