FJ knife lanyard vs compass lanyard..

I'm just reading the book " Luftwaffe gravity knife " by Mack.A.Pattarozzi..

Book says that in fact there were 2 different types of cord used ..

The diamond pattern braided hemp or sisal cord and the twisted tree-strand cord.

The twisted cord was used in flightpants for the compass only and not the knife.
I'm wondering what compass that is, while all pilots had the arm compass.

    Anyone a idea ?

Also, one of my "un-touched" flightpants has lanyards in all 3 pockets and they are all of the diamond pattern.

Jos, I think Mack is incorrect on that point. I think they are all for the knife. I have a number of variations. I think the ones for the compass are the ones which loop through the belt and some have thought (in the past) they were for the knife as well.

I agree..,...but in fact I think they were multi purpose in the light of flight stuff.

Flightpants have 3 lanyards.., 1 for the flare gun,1 for the knife and one ( I think ) for the signal mirror.
Both types of cord are used and I think the twisted cords are just late ones.
So, any of these types will go fine with the knife.

I guess Mack is talking about a field compass ?
In that case, the ones that loop through the belt are the leather ones ?

Here's a shot of the flightpants which holds 3 lanyards originaly.

Jos, I agree they served several purposes.

Here is a thread we did in the past.

BTW, the book we are referring to is a superb book! The only reference to date on the Luftwaffe gravity knife.

For what it is worth, here is a lanyard also in an "untouched" pair of leather flight pants...the knots on the lanyard appear to have never been undone. This lanyard is in the pocket meant for the flare gun

Has anyone seen a chain instead a cord? This set came straight from the vet via a friend of mine with a lot of other great stuff and he said his whole outfit used those chains.

Albert, I have never seen a chain used before but it makes perfect sense. Same goes for an entire unit using a chain. I would suspect that someone in the unit arranged for a local contract.

                    Leather lanyard

This knife and lanyard came from a vet who stated that he took it from the body of a Gernam paratrooper that he helped cut down from a tree.
