The wee fella used to be 6' & probably just received a gold wound badge for surviving a canopy failure.

I meet a WW2 Brit Para veteran at an ANZAC day parade 3 yrs ago. I'm 6'5" & he was about 5'4". I noticed his Para wings on the lapel on his jacket & said to him "so you used to be a Para did you" he replied "Yes mate I did. I used to be your hieght once.......before me shute failed !".

Gotta love Brit humor! Guess that's why I enjoy Monte Python so much
My grandfather was with the 11th Airborne in the South Pacific and he was about the same height as that Brit Para veteran.

I swear I lost an inch or two in height from my jumps with the 82nd

This is more than a naive attitude, it is also a bit demeaning. Audie Murphy won the US Medal of Honor in WW II and he was 5'5'' when he enlisted in the Army. I know SF and Seal officers (highly decorated) who are only a little taller.

Well let's not get politically correct, either -

It WAS a bit of a rough barb, by milcollector. On the other hand, C.O. Sarge seems quite capable of defending himself. & as Mike39's anecdote demonstrates, even paras on the butt end of such jokes can understand the humor. I reckon such veterans would not even be fazed by such an inconsequential comment. I imagine most have endured much worse. I'm not suggesting we deteriorate into a mob of inconsiderate SOBs, but I do get quite sick to my stomach when we go overboard by being offended because we perceive someone ELSE being insulted. Especially when the that other person may not be insulted at all...

Civility is fine, but let's be realistic, as well.

            Best,
            Matt

I have no problem with good natured ribbing, I am sure that para in the picture heard every short joke there was.
Didnot seem stop him from doing his job thats all that matters.
