I think Mark had posted this photo in an effort to date it. Several of us commented that we felt is was taken just before the Ardennes offensive. James had point out a interesting observation via PM. Thought it would be interesting to reopen this.
James pointed out that in this photo, von der Heydte wears the rank of Major on his smock. He also correctly pointed out that von der Heydte was promoted to Oberst Leutnant on Aug 1, 1944. On rank insignia that would be another gull, for a total of two gulls and two bars. James also pointed out that he felt von der Heydte was wounded/injured earlier on...perhaps in 1943.
Any thoughts?
