    Knochensack Repair

..."I've spoken to think these micro-level techniques might one day in our lifetimes make virtually invisible repairs to cotton garments possible as well. But for now, any restoration using available techniques would reduce rather than increase the smock's value and appeal"...

What about a repair using all original material? Let's say you get a piece of original "gruen meliert"? Original zippers and 60 year old matching cotton or linen thread are not really a problem over here.
I think this would still be better than some 21st century high tech repair.
Does the smock look like the changes were done in war time or does it more look like "played to death" by kids in the 50ties or 60ties...?

No, that would be really bad, and would seriously reduce the value of the smock IMO. The technologies I'm talking about are nano-weaving techniques which involve the reconnection of individual fiber strands. This is not possible now, but I understand it may be possible one day to repair a rip or tear in cotton, for example, by microscopically reconnecting the individual threads. This would not involve the introduction of a single molecule that is not original to the smock. Any postwar restoration which involves adding material would, IMO, drastically reduce the value and desireability of the piece.
