A photo of Fallschirmjager in Russia

    Hi All

I recently bought this period pic of 2 Fallschirmjager sitting in a dug out somewhere in Russia. I really like the pic and it will go nicely next to one of my FJ helmets but I am intrigued to find out more about this pic and where it was taken In Russia. I had some help translating the back and this is what it probably says.

“In diesem … haben wir 14 Tage gewohnt und feindliche Gegenangriffe überstanden”
    Orelbogen, Russland Februar 1943

In this (IMO trenches) we lived for 14 days and we survived enemy counterattack’s.
    Orelbogen, Russia February 1943.

The key in my opinion is Orelbogen and the date is February 1943 Russia? I would really like to know where the FJ were in Russia at that time and which unit they were part of. Sergey I think you might be able to help. The only info I could really find on the net was FJ units were in this area below at that time.

    Smolensk and Rzhev

The 7. Fliegerdivision returned to the Russian front in October 1942 to serve in the area around Smolensk. They then fought in the Rzhev pocket where they held off Marshall Zhukhov’s Operation Mars offensive in November and December. Some Fallschirmjäger units fought on in the salient until April 1943.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I looked up Orelbogen but I can't really find anything? is it a town in Russia was it the name of an offensive?

Hi Shaun, nice photo, congrats !
I also really enjoyed seeing it. Now I know who pays good money for pix of my interests
Based on writing its Orel sity area, winter 43.
Some units of FJR1 took part in action there, but that was very short operation. Not so many sources write about it.
I will provide you some more exact info soon, its somewhere among my files.
Looking for FJR2 combat pics in Russia.
