    Padding rubber

I'm trying to get more knowledge about the padding rubber used in M38 Fallschirmjager helmets. The knowledge I have now is that it was made from natural sponge rubber. Since spongerubber has a open celstructure the paddings have a "skin" on both sides. To be sure I have an original reference I use my dug up relics of padding rubber and a picture of a dug up padding from a reliable well known dealer. This padding as well as my own relics seem to have a textile skin. This skin can be peeled off and seems to raffle. On the picture I added it seems that it came off partially. The way it wrinkles give me the idea that there was a textile skin?

Can you enlighten me how the skin was added?
