Soldbuch Group 44. ID Stalingrad - Cassino

I got this Soldbuch group from a Medic in the 44. I.D. later Hoch und Deutschmeister Division - Soldbuch was iussed from End of August 1939 to End of war in April-May 1945...this guy was all the time in his Servie in the same unit....San. Komp. 44 - 44 Infantery Division !

I think he survived the heavy battle and first destcrution of his Divsion in the Pocket of Stalingrad - later he comes with the new 44. ID to Italy in 1943 - after survived the Battles of Monte Cassino he was earned in September 1944 - first the War merrit Cross First class..some days later the Iron Cross second class.....!


In his Civil Life he was medic in a hospital at vienna - so he was all the time medic in his Unit.....!


Nice there are a lot of papers a diary from 1942 - first time at Russia.....and some letters to his lovley wife.....nice he write her - he lost is War Merrit Cross First class...and she must buy a new one and send to him....i think he dont come at the end of war as POW......


Who know - why he survived Stalingrad ? Was the Hospital - Medic station not in the pocket ?

I don't see the Stalingrad cross on the shoulder boards, so probaby yes, he was detached outside the pocket when the 6.Armee surrendered.

I see that a KVKI and an EKII were awarded the same day, on 1st September 1944. Was this a common practice? I also notice that the entries are done with different pens...

I have same units soldiers…. here with nitces of the Sanitäts Komp. 2/44 on Cassino front mot. from veterans memoirs books….

Good point, I don't think this entry is correct. His photo also gives it away, he is wearing the KVK 1.Klasse but not the EK2 ribbon. His ribbonbar clearly shows the WiO and the KVK2.

I agree, it's a pity. Maybe I'm wrong of course but I think that this entry was to be discussed a bit.
An alteration like that may affect the value of a document considerably.

Of course! That's the best behavior you can have
I bought recently a messed with Soldbuch too that had bad entries. A honest piece that was badly damaged by somebody who tought it was a good idea to improve it artificially. I knew about its "problems" but bought it anyway because of my great interest about that specific unit, but it was a real mess Now I'm studying the best way to remove the fake entries because I don't want to have them on the Soldbuch, but I see it's a very hard task. I made many tests with different products on old written piece of papers, but none seems to work properly.
