Walter Witt joined voluntarily 8. Kavellerie Regiment, after a short time he was transferred to the erzats regiment of IR 374. Later he joined IR 374 and Grenadier regiment 374. The war started for Walter by crossing the Dutch border (10-5-1940). IR 374 was not a regiment how saw a lot of action during the Western campaign. This drastically changed during operation Barbarossa.
During the Barbarossa operation the 207 Division changed to a Security Division. During the Russian campaign the Division preformed line of communications and security operations for Army Group North. Those security divisions where faired division how committed many war crimes. The 374IR/GR took part in many partisan fighting’s. Occasionally the regiment took part in defense battles, offizier Walter earned his ek2,Isa and VWA black (for getting wounded) during the defense battles of the Ladoga Lake. After Walter recovered his regiment took part in more partisan fighting’s and defense battles. In April 1944 the 207 Sicherung Division where thrown in the main Battle of lake Peipus. During this battle the casualties where so high that the regiment of Witt (374 Grenadier regiment) was disbanded. On the 10th of Mai 1944 Walter received his close combat clasp .
The remaining regiment was reformed to the Fusilier- Bataillon 12 (12. Luftwaffe felddivision) in Mai 1944. They fought bravely to prevent the Russians for creating a pocket. Walter was wounded twice during the fighting’s, the first time 3-8-1944 (splinter) and the second time 4-9-1944 (concussion) exactly one month before the Courland Pocket was closed. For his wounding’s was Walter awarded with the VWA Silver.
After his recovery was Walter transferred to some Jäger Erzats-units. He was finally on 7-5-1945 dismissed of the Amry.
