I think he was back with his old unit, Nachrichten-Regiment z.b.V. 618.
To bad we cannot read the company. This special purpose signals Regiment was an Army unit made up from Army and Navy personnel. It was placed under Navy high command. Its Company's were stationed all over the Belgium and French coast. See attached image below for their locations. I assume he was in one of those company's and somehow died. Maybe due to an air attack while retreating?
I'm collecting anything related to the towns Castricum and Bakkum during WWII.
Also soldbucher from 116pzdiv. And 1944-1945 eastfront pockets, kampfgruppe and Oder front. My website: Gotrick.nl
Thank you very much Admiraal, most helpful and intriguing! I will have to read up about this unit. I was wondering about the uniform he is wearing in both photos, It is certainly not typical Navy. I thought it might be Coastal Artillery, but now I think it may be an Army uniform.
I found some information to add to your interesting complex:
Four days after his "Führerschein" was expended (13.7.44) he was KIA (17.7.44)
The reason for him to be hospitalized in Leipzig "Reserve Lazarett V - 43. Volksschule" was code 7 -
influenza. After that he was "kv" and sent back to "Ers.(atz) Tr.(uppe)"
24.-3. - 31.3.144 he was on special leave. Reason: "Bombengesch.(ädigt) Eavakuiert" - his home was
destroyed by bombs and his family was evacuated.
Gerdan
Thank you very much Gerdan, most insightful and greatly appreciated! It would be most interesting to find out how he was killed. As 'Admiraal', it might have been in transit while evacuating. I guess it may never be known....
