Grenadier-Regiment 578 on the italian central appenins

    Hi all,
I want to show you here a lots of the Gefreiter Johann Lehmann. He was in the 6th Company, GR 578. During the winter 1943/1944 the unit was in the Sangro area and fought against the american soldier of the 34th Infantry Division and then faced the 2nd Maroccan Division. The battlefield was quite hard. The mountains in the area have an height between 1000 and 2000 meters. The soldier of all the army fought at low temperatures and often with snow. The GR 578 was on the left of the Monte Pantano. Johann was wounded on December 1st 1943, but it seems it was a light wound and stayed with the unit.

From November 1st till December 17th 1943 the division suffered heavy losses against the Allies:

KIA: 11 (Officers) ; 284 (NCO and troops)
    WIA: 20 (O) ; 986 (NCO+T)
of the wounded soldiers, stayed by the troops and didn't went on field hospital in the rear areas 6 officers and 174 NCO or troops. One of this was Johann.

The Wound Badge award doc was signed by Hauptmann Erich Michalski, Ritterkreuz for the battles of the fall 1943.

A very nice photo of Michalski in Italy with his Ritterkreuz.

The last intresting doc of the Konvolut.
Congratulation letter written and signed by Oberst Friedrich Trompeter, regiment commander.

... EKI. For sure a brave action during the retreat, but where?
We can assume or in the Trasimeno lake area or after, when in July the division was deployed in the Arezzo area.

On August 1st 1944 the 578 is south from Bibbiena in the Falciano area.

Bibbiena in in the Casentino Valley.... one of the beautiful part of the italian Appennino.

                        ... Bibbiena!
