    Hi,

    found it yesterday at the local fleamarket, it was very rusty, after some careful polishing now a little bit better.

    my only question is why it is not oval but rectangular like the IDs of POWs?

    It is possible that this dog tag belonged to eastern volunteer recruited in POW lager. Each German division had a few hundreds of them mainly in auxiliary formations .

      This very tag is fake IMHO. However this kind of Gebirgsjager existed and were issued to German soldiers. I'm not sure what is the story behind - perhaps shortage of army issue blanks is the simplest explaination. I have one of these together with some matching docs but would need to look for it.
