    Heeresflak Soldbuch in Italy

Our soldier is Helmut Kattner and he was born on August 16th, 1.923 in Berkamen, Unna.

He was single, evangelic and works in the mining sector. He was orphan as no father name in his next of kin notification, only his mother Suzanna, maiden name Hoffmann.

He entered the Wehrmacht on June 20th, 1.942 when his soldbuch was open by 1.(schw). Heeres Flakartillerie Ersatz Abteilung 276 con nomero 278 y chapa 278 1. H.Fl.A.E.A. 276.

His first units were training ones till he was detached to A.R. 345, first to 6. and later 5. (Flak) Batteries, probable during the first months of 1.943 till this unit II (Flak) Abteilung was used to form IV./Artillerie Regiment 29 on March 1st, 1943 a short lived unit as it was again redesigned on March 9th, as Heeres Flak Artillerie Abteilung (mot) 313.

He was hospitalized from an accident from June 9th till 29th in Res.Laz.Gotha and released to Heeres Flak Artillerie Ersatz und Ausbildung Abteilung 279 in Gotha.

While with this unit he received his second and third leaves, one from July 2nd till 17th as Genesungensurlaub and the other for July 29th till August 15th as Erholungsurlaub, unfortunately the last one was cut short when he entered the Reserve Lazarett Unna on August 10th with Angina and was released on August 17th. Also during his time he received his first security check on July 28th.

After this he was back to his unit the 313 that was attached to the newly created 29 Panzergrenadier Division, heir of the 29 I.D. (mot) destroyed in Stalingrad in February 1.943.

He will serve always on the Italian front, going from Sicily to the Po River and the Apennine Mountains.

He fought in Rome, Nettuno, Florencia, Rimini, Bolognia and his final battles between the Po river and the Apennine Mountains with the LXXVI Panzerkorps against the British 8th Army.

With this unit he took part in the Anzio battles and there he won his two medals:

Iron Cross 2nd class on March 27th, 1.944 by the 29 Panzergrendier Division stamped by Fp 15223C and signed by a Leutnant u. stellv. Battr.Fhr
Heeres Flakartillerieabzeichen on April 30th, 1.944 by General des Heeresflaktruppen stamped by Fp 15223C and signed by the same officer as above.

I suppose he give a hard time to the Allied troops with his 88s.

He was never wounded or sick till the end the war neither receive any leave, just a course for E-Messmann in schwere Flak from January 8th till March 29th, 1.945, which he approved on March 28th.

No entry for being POW but for sure he used his Soldbuch as an ID postwar as he denazified all stamps.

Fp 15223C was for 2./Heeres Flakartillerie Abteilung 313

Nice book. Since there is a cross where the father's name would be he must have died.

A real pity, always nice to connect different documents. He served with the 1 Batterie and mine with the 2nd, both with 88 but not easy they met each other.

Thanks for showing this wonderful piece.

                Hello Angel !

Amazing, how you always find interesting books to cure your various "diseases" (1. Pz.Div., Flak etc.).
(Although : Does this one really help ?! It is not blue !!).

This one is especially interesting for me as well, due to its organizational history :

                345. ID(mot) was formed as a so called "Kriemhild division" from late Nov. 1942 onward at Wildflecken training ground.
Usually, these were regular Infantry divisions, but 345. (and 386. as well), had some pecularities :
                - fully motorized, a Panzer-Abteilung, a Kradschützen-Btl. and an "unorthodox" Artillery regiment :
Only 2 Abt., but the I. Abt. had a Werfer and a StuG battery, while the II.Abt. had 2 heavy and 1 light Flak batteries.
                (See 2nd scan).

Originally intended for the East, both were sent to France in January 1943. (345. ID(mot) located in the area near Pau).
In early 1943, it was decided that those two divisions were to be used to rebuilt the 29. and 3. ID(mot), by sending them
all the remaining personnel, that survived Stalingrad (I think, Ians SB shows a nice example of that process !).

So, I think it is possible, that your man was transferred to his Flak battery at the time of formation (or shortly after)
and then stayed always in the very same unit and served with 29. Pz.Gren.Div. to the very end.
It is just that his unit underwent various redesignations, to carry on the tradition of the "Falke-Division".

                Here is a Kriegsgliederung, that gives the organization (2 Battr each w/ 4- 8,8cm Flak, 1 Bttr. 6- 2cm Vierlings-Flak),
                strength on 1.1.45 (88,3 %) and even the exact KStN 1711 (f.G.).
This can be found online, so that you know the exact organization of your mans battery :

What is amazing is the amount of info you always find and how you are always willing to share it with us. I can not thank you enough for your help.

This is a medicine that works to both sides, Heer and LW Flak, a pity it was not from Heeresflakartillerie Abteilung 299.

                  Thanks again for your help
