    Panzer Leutnant

    Hello All:

I recently acquired a nice Schirmmutze for a Panzer Leutnant along with some documentation as to his service and the cap. The documentation consists of a photo of the Leutnant wearing the actual cap, a note to the previous owner briefly outlining his service along with some copies of pages from his soldbuch. I do not own the soldbuch - I wish I did! There is also a note from the Leutnant to the former owner dating the photo of him with the cap on. I would be interested in knowing more about this Leutnant's service as I am currently putting together a display in my home with the cap, the photo, etc. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I can comment on his time in Norway. He's gotten himself confused a little, quite common and understandable over time. By the time he joined Panzer 'Division' Norwegen it was the remnants left behind after the 25 Pz.Div. had transferred to France at the end of August 43. I can see from his SB he was assigned to 1./Pz.Abt.Norwegen, he certainly remembers correctly that the panzers he trained on were 24tons and armed with 5cm or 7.5cm guns but they were Pzkpfw.III, his company having 6 Pz.III ausf.N with the short barreled L/24 7.5cm gun and 8 Pz.III ausf.L or M with a long-barreled 5cm gun. The abteilung used these types up to the end of the war. The 'division' (in reality it wasn't anywhere close to that in size) was based just outside Oslo to the North, about where today's Oslo airport is located.

Do you have any more pages from his SB? For example further unit pages and his awards?

Thank you for your information, Simon. Unfortunately, I do not have any more copies of pages from his soldbuch. I really wish I could get the original but that is probably like finding a specific grain of sand on the shore of Omaha Beach!
