    Hello Oriano,

I found the house/home of your guy Willi Steinmetz in Neu Anspach/ Taunus, Backhausgasse 14.

There is still living a lady named Ingrid Steinmetz. You could find his home by Google earth.

    Cari saluti

    Gerdan

This is the local memory in Neu Anspach where all soldiers KIA and MIA from Anspach are

listed. Your guy Willi Steinmetz should be listed also on that bronze plate.

You see the Neu Anpach mayor Hoffmann commemorating the dead soldiers of his town .

Many thanks once more for explaining another important part of history .

          One question :
Were these transports not marked with a red cross or something similar ?

          Best rgeards,

          Archi
          thanks my friend!

Probably it was not possible to have the red cross ship protection for the loading of military equipment that was the most important cargo of the ship for the Germans.

The SINFRA vessel arrived in the port of Heraklion (Crete) in the first days of October 1943. For several days, German train convoys had collected, at this base, war material (bombs of aircraft, in particular) from neighboring airports. These bombs were destined to be disengaged from the Luftwaffe in North Africa, but after the Anglo-American victory, this arsenal constituted a surplus, as well as the very important airports of the island of Crete.

finally, precisely for this reason, it was followed by two military escort ships

          ciao Oriano

Oriano, great write up as always. Particularly as you always cover what was going on the other side of the lines as well. To even include the British pilot responsible for the sinking. Well done.
