    First Panzer SB

Hi all, I am still learning about SB's and WP's but thought I would post some pics of my first panzer SB that I picked up at the SOS. Researching this should be fun!

    Nice photo!

With the unit he was with and time.....he was probably on the outskirts of Stalingrad where he got his EK II.

Its a second issue Soldbuch. Can you show us page 2?
I'm collecting anything related to the towns Castricum and Bakkum during WWII.
Also soldbucher from 116pzdiv. And 1944-1945 eastfront pockets, kampfgruppe and Oder front.

        Hello !

If this is your 1st Pz.Div. Soldbuch, congrats !
At first glance it looks, to be connected to some very interesting units.

        Researching this should be fun!
I agree, but it might also be not so easy, especially as it as Zweitschrift.
If you need some help, feel free to ask via the forum.

It might be interesting to see more pages, especially the hospital pages (p.12/13)
        and the leave (p.23).

        Best regards,

        Archi

2.6.1942 III. Abteilung, Panzer-Regiment 7 formed the new III. Abteilung of Panzer-Regiment 36.

This could be how he transferred from 10 Panzer to 14 Panzer Division.

Perhaps he was III. Abteilung but the Soldbuch shows I. Abteilung against his Black Wound Badge. At the time of his wound 10 Panzer Division was fighting around Juchnow, Russia.

The info on transfer is not recorded in his Soldbuch as it is a replacement.

His wounds from 16.10.1944, if he was still with Panzer-Regiment 36 would be for actions in Courland.

              /Ian

                Hello !

Thanks for posting the additional pages and indeed an interesting Soldbuch .

As the Soldbuch is a Zweitschrift, only very few informations are entered and
a lot of details on his career are lost.

Ian gave a very good summary on what can be concluded from the awards entered.
Some minor additions, to explain some details :

                - According to the divisional history of 10. Pz.Div., the Division was authorized to have 3 battalions in Pz.Rgt. 7,
but the III. was never raised in 1941.
When the division was reorganized in France (Amiens) from May 1942 onward, the former I. Btl./Pz.Rgt. 7 was
redesignated as the III. and a new I. Btl. was formed.
However, already during May the III. Btl. was sent to Russia, to reinforce the Pz.Rgt. 36 of 14. Pz.Div. as III. Btl.
So his sequence of units is likely: I./Pz.Rgt 7, (redesignated => III.) and then transferred to Pz.Rgt 36 (14. Pz.Div.),
all in accordance with the award entries .

                - Regarding the combat in Russia :
I tried to locate the place of his wounding from the divisional history, but it turned out almost impossible.
Already from February 42 onward, the division was totally dispersed and fought at about a dozen different places.
This didn't change until end of March. This nicely illustrates the desperate situation of the German Heer in Winter 1941/42.

Tank strength of 10. PzD was down to about 12 tanks in total, and therefore many of the tank crews fought as infantry.
I'll attach a (symbolic) map, which shows the locations of some of the battlegroups, just to give an impression.
(The locations marked in green refer to the positions of those battlegroups in early February, underlying Map is early March).

                - With 14. Pz.Div., he took part in the offensive towards Stalingrad.
In September, the Division was given the task to take Beketowka, a Southern suburb of Stalingrad. The division
did gain some ground but couldn't achieve the main task. End of the month it was withdrawn as reserve of the 4. Pz.Armee.
His EK II award is likely related to these fightings in September, as Ian already suggested.

                Best regards,

                Archi

Here is one which you may find interesting...

Soldbuch opened in Bamberg 3 days before your guy. Same unit and Stamm Kp. Same authorizing signature.

                  Best,

Okay, just me, but since this is a zweitschrift and all 4 of the awards should've been entered same time/person/handwriting, does the "EK2" entry not look a little off? Just my first impression....

                    Still, a nice book.

Even if it does he is wearing it in the photo....with that said the staples are a bit shiny!

A scan of the photo from a disctance would help

I think the EKII entry is fine. The writer just filled the space he had.
I must say, i had to take a closer look as well. But the date and "14 Pz.Div." writing next to it is exactly as the other awards. Same ink color and writing style.

JKDelCollo, can you show us a photo of the front cover?

Everyone, first thanks so much for providing me so much information both about the soldier and his actions, but also about soldbuchs. Like I stated when I began this thread, I am VERY new to soldbuchs and just getting my feet wet. As requested, I am attaching photos of the cover and also the inside cover with the photo. Thanks again, everyone!

I plan to post my observations about this Soldbuch (already half-written) in the next few days. If any other entries appear on other pages - and I mean any other pages, including the clothing issuance pages - please post them. It's important to show all of the entries in this Soldbuch in order to fully assess it.
