    116. Panzer-Division "Windhund" Soldbuch

I returned from the Show of Shows late on Saturday. It was a rather good show and I acquired about thirteen IDs, five of which I am keeping - here is one of them. Unteroffizier Johann Hofstätter who served exclusively with Aufklärung (Reconnaissance) units from 1939-1945, most notably the Panzerspäh-Kompanie (Armored Reconnaissance Car Company) of Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 116 (Armored Reconnaissance Battalion 116) of the famed 116. Panzer-Division "Windhund" (116th Armored Division "Greyhound") from approximately March 1943 to May 1945:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/116th_...ion_(Wehrmacht)

Hofstätter fought at Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and the Hürtgen Forest among other battles. It's amazing that Hofstätter was never wounded in six years of fighting, probably partially thanks to the armored cars he served in. What I find interesting and have never seen in a Soldbuch before is that Hofstätter's Soldbuch number is 101 and his Kriegsstammrollennummer (Unit Registration Number) was 101 with all five field units he served with. This indicates that his first unit was used to form his second unit, his second unit to form his third unit, and so on. The signatures of the company commander of the Panzerspäh-Kompanie of Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 116 appear multiple times in the Soldbuch - three examples on page 15 alone. The company commander initially held the rank of Leutnant (2nd Lieutenant), then Oberleutnant (1st Lieutenant), and finally, Rittmeister (Captain). I am hoping that someone can identify the name of this officer for me. I have a feeling he might have been a Knight's Cross recipient. I hope you enjoy viewing this Soldbuch.

Panzer Aufklärung Abteilung 116 has "only" three Riiterkreuzträger, two of them officers and neither match your signatures on the security checks:

          Auert, Heinz 28.03.1945 Leutnant d.R. Führer 2./Pz.Aufkl.Abt 116
          Stephan, Eberhard 12.01.1945 Major Kdr Pz.Aufkl.Abt 116

As DKiG you have the next:

          Schliep, Jürgen, 22.12.1944, Rittmeister, 1./Pz.Aufkl.Abt. 116

          Hope this helps

By the way, very nice Soldbuch,, can wait to see the others.

Thanks Angel! After examining the signatures again, I believe they are the signatures of Jürgen Schliep.

                Hello !

Excellent Soldbuch, thanks for showing !

                You are absolutely right :
He was always in the same company and that while participating in every important campaign since 1939!
I think this alone would make it a very special SB but in addition, it is to such interesting units :
                - 4. leichte Division in Poland
                - 9. Pz.Div. in France
                - 16. ID(mot) Russia
                - 116. PzDiv. in the West

The Signature should be from Rittm. Jürgen Schliep, who was awarded the DKiG in Dec. 1944.

                Best regards,

                Archi

P.S.: Too late while checking my books, sorry.

Me too, this is why I add the name of Schliep even he was "just" a DKiG winner.

Now show us more, thirteen ID are too much for keep to yourself, even if 8 will be soon in the market.

                  Cheers

                        Angel,

I think I have a Soldbuch, photo, dog tag and two award documents for a member of Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 1. It's a long story, but I left it with a friend at the Show of Shows and will have it back in my hands on Monday. I will keep you informed.

Very nice pick up. Looks like he was mechanic in civilian life? If so, a helpful skill indeed. Coming through almost 6 years of front service without a wound in that unit would have required a bit of luck too.
