Wehrpass captain ZYBON, german Cross 3./G.R. "Grossdeutschland" + Westfront !

    Hi Guys !

First, let me wish you all Guys an healthy new Year 2019, with hopefully new additions for your ID collection throughout the year !

Want to share here one of my latest acquisition. Bernhard ZYBON served by "GD" from January 1941 until april 1943. For unclear reason, he went back to the civilian Life in April 43 and served by the Reichsbahn til september 1944. THis experienced officer was then again called for Duty and took command from Ist Btl./Volks-Gren.Rgt.953 (361.VGD) actually rebuilt at the military training center of WAHN by Köln. Transferred to the westfront, he was taken prisoner during the fightings on the Hill 510 (côte du mont Saint-Jean) in the visinity of the village MOYENVIC mainly against US Troops from 26th "Yankee" Division.

Beside the local interest for myself (I have 30minutes to drive to be in Moyenvic), and the attribution of the german Cross on 17.5.43 as former company commander of 3./G.R."GD", this ID has IMO some interesting points :

    - the detailed list of all functions and Units(page 21)
    - the VERY EARLY GWB attribution (15.9.42) for 5 differents Wounds with precise description on page 34

Feel free to comment. I tried shortly before X-Mas entering contact with the Family, unfortunately no answer received now.

There is a bunch of advanced collector from the GD-Division over there, I know 2 or 3 have some breathtaking collection, but don't know them in person.... It would be an extraordinary addition to get a good scan of captain Z. wearing its GD-Uniform. Any Help in this matter would be unvaluable ! Thank you. L.

You do not see a Wehrpass where military service is stopped for civilian service this late in the war. You do see some after the victory in France when the military was down sizing for a short period but never this late in the war. Thanks for showing.

Hi Jeff. "UK gestellt zugünsten der Reichsbahn" means he belonged to the Reichsbahn with NO possibility for any other organisation to commandeer him for any reason !

IMO in relation with his last Wound on 11.9.42, a piece of shrapnel on the left half of the Face.

Very nice Wehrpass! indeed, early GWB and nice entries.
Would be cool if someone found a GD picture of him
I'm collecting anything related to the towns Castricum and Bakkum during WWII.
Also soldbucher from 116pzdiv. And 1944-1945 eastfront pockets, kampfgruppe and Oder front.

                Hello Lionel !

Very nice Wehrpass with many interesting aspects.
Congratulations and thanks for sharing !

                - Regarding his uk.-Stellung :
I think what Jeff refers to is, that it is very uncommon, to see that it happened so late,
                1940 would be more common.
This aspect is also interesting for me :
His uk. Stellung was called off (wurde aufgehoben) around 4./5. Sept. 1944.
This is exactly the date when WK VI called up its Walküre units (among them EuA-Btl. 58),
and I would be surprised if this coincidence in dates is just by accident !

                - Regarding the date of his captivity :
On 8.11.44, 3. US Army launched a major attack. At that time, Hptm. Zybons battalion was located at
very right flank of 361. VGD (and helding Moyenvic).
The attack started with a major artillery barrage, and the battalion of Hptm. Zybon was almost
wiped out within the first few hours.

I'll attach two scans connected to this, explaining a few more details from German and US side :
The first is from the FMS report by Gen.Maj. Philippi (Kdr. 361 VGD), the other one from the book:
Patton at Bay by John Rickard.

                Best regards,

                Archi

                  Salut Archi !

Let me first wish you an happy new year, and thank you very sincerely for the invaluable Help you provided to many of us throughout 2018. Your ability to find the "matching source" and your ability to exploit all internet sources is IMO second tyo none ! Many thanks for your imput on our threads !!

Back to our subject : What I mainly saw in 1940 are final liberations of service for many older officers - mainly WW1 Vets - after the western campain. "UK-Stellung" means - if I am not mistaking - that this Officer was still considered as a soldier and temporarly placed under control of a civilian administration for a undefinite time. So, these are quite different situations... In the case of Zybon, perhaps he was in physically good condition but this wound in his face needed more time to plenty recover ?? That is what I ignore, and will be difficult to explain without help of a family member...

Concerning the battle of Moyenvic, I also found an excellent article written by a local association - sorry it's in french - http://www.chemins-faisant.com/index...rres&Itemid=91
Anyway, this battle, especially the conquest of the Saint-Jean Hill resulted in the Loss of 478 US soldiers (KIA, MIA, WIA), which means that both 361.and 559.VGD put up quite a fight in this place !!
