    Soldbuch 59.ID Holland (Market Garden)

    Hi,

Here is one of my new soldbucher. Not the most spectaculair SB but I really like it because he fought in the area where I live:

Heinz Griep is born on 04-12-1925 in Stolzenberg in the area of Solingen, Germany. Heinz was before the war working as an electrician.

In june 1943 has is called up for active duty in the german army. He was trained with infanterie nachrichten ersatz kompanie 522. After his training he will be send to Norway with the Armee-Nachrichten-Regiment 635. Not much action here but that will change when he was reassigned to the 59 infanterie division.

On 26-06-1944 the 59.ID is formed in Gross-Born. This division consists from soldiers that had duty in Norway and Russia. After training they were send to France in the area of Dunkrik. The invasion of France is in full operation by the allieds and Heinz and his friends will soon be involved in some fightings. Through France and Belgium the 59.ID will withdraw to Holland. The 59.ID had some serious fightings in manly Belgium. When they arrived in Holland Market Garden was about the begin!

17-09-1944 the allieds lands in different places in Holland and Heinz and his comrads where send to fight the allied troops. The 59.ID had some hard fights in places like: Son, Best, Schijndel, Liempde and Boxtel. On the 07-10-1944 Heinz get his EKII for his actions around 29-09-1944. Probably he earned his medal for the fightings around the village Schijndel. The EKII will be awarded on nomination by Generalleutenant Walter Poppe from the 59.ID

After the heavy fightings in Holland the 59.ID is withdrawn in the direction of the Rurh area in Germany. At some point Heinz will be made a POW by the allieds and on 07-04-1949 Heinz will be released as an POW.

    Thanks for looking

Interesting Soldbuch of an, in my opinion, almost unnoticed division, and always nice to pick up items that are linked to home! Makes it kind of local history... I like the wear, by the way! Pretty much a "frontline" Soldbuch!
I have a little set of documents of Grenadier-Regiment 1034, 59. ID. EK2 awarded for the fightings along the Roer river near Erkelenz in December 1944.

                Best,

                Matthias
