Probably the most gruesome soldbuch i ve seen but yet one of my favourites...
Rudolf Schäfer s Student born in Buchen on 8.5.1926 (the exact day 19 years before the war Ended) in
Buchen.
He Starts his training in July 1944 then he s sent to the Luftkriegsschule 2 in Berlin-Gatow and finally
to the Luftkriegsschule 10 based in Fürstenwalde (Spree).
On the 1.4.1945 in the last month of the war he s assigned like many soldiers from those Schools to the
10./Fallschirmjäger Regiment 30 of the 10. FallschirmJäger Division to fill the gaps in Austria in the
area north of Graz.
The Division fights in those days west of Vienna near St. Pölten stopping some russian attacks. around
the 18th of April they had to abandon their position and retreat west on the line Eschenau - Buchberg -
Traisen - Wiesenfeld.
On the 25.4.1945 (his soldbuch and his little 1944 pocket calendar were in his uniform pocket as usual),
His unit was in the area of TRAISEN.
The 18 year old Rudolf Schäfer was obviously right in in the middle of an explosion that probably
shattered his body and killed him instantly.
Blood must have been splattered all over the place and soaked his soldbuch that also received a shrapnell
hole from the bomb that killed him, the signs are obvious. His pocket calendar also got pierced and a bit
of blood remains inside of it as well..
Because in the lot there s also other school documents etc i presume that even tho it was soaked in
Blood, they still sent the soldbuch home to his family with the calendar.
These are the pieces that show exactly what any war really is RIP.
Rudolf Schäfer is now Buried in the German war Cemetery in Oberwoelbling in Austria
