When you are infected with the blue disease....

After a couple of nice Flak Soldbuchs that increase my interest in the Flak arm of the LW finally I was caught in its net so I need to go on and feed the beast, hope with this piece it will rest a little, but I doubt it.

Her we have the Soldbuch of Wachtmeister Karl Weber.

Our brave soldier was serving with the LW prior the outbreak of the hostilities as indicated by his rank of Unteroffizier when his Soldbuch was open on the first day of the conflict by his sole combat unit, he spent the whole war with the same 3./Flak Regiment 25.

Before going in deep with the Soldbuch I have made a little research into this unit (how difficult is the Flak to research, why they can not sty with his Regiment and need to jump from one to another?)

The fact he served with the same battery makes some thing easy so here it goes what I have found today, as always any help is welcomed.

The Flak Regiment 25 was created on April 1st, 1.935 with the former Heer Flak Abteilung 5 when all antiaircraft units were put under the control of the LW.

When war broke his battery was stationed in Oberndorf an Neckar.

No combat during Poland campaign but things changed when the French start to be a little bit nervous and decide to make some recon flights, this is not something any self respected Flam man will allowed so our man battery took cards into this matter and so this happen:

    - April 26, 1.940 at 16h28' with the use of 33 shots from its 88 guns a French Potez 63 was shoot down at a height of 800 m
    - April 30th, 1.940 at 17h48' with the use of 20 shots from its 88 guns two French Potez 63 were shoot down at. height of 550 m

Both actions took part near Bad Boll, maybe someone can help me to pinpoint with unit was the one which lost the 3 aircrafts.

Now I need some help as I have no idea where and if the unit took part in the French campaign, please any help highly appreciated.

Now it was time to look East and his unit took part in the Russian Invasion, prior it she was stationed in Romania in December 1.940.

In June 1.941 he was put under the command of Stab/Flak Rgt. 37 and served as support of Panzergruppe 1 ended the yer in the Rostov area.

In May 1.942 I Flakkorps took control of all Flak units under Luftflotte 4 and he served under this command.
    - Till November 1st 1.943 under Stab/Flak Regiment 7 with 15 Flak Division in the South of Russia
    - Till February 01st, 1.944 under Stab/Flak Regiments 99 and 133 with 10 Flak Division in Charkow, Kiev and ****omir
    - Till April 1st, 1.944 under Stab/Flak Regiment 48 with 17 Flak Division in the South of Russia
    - Till June 1st, 1.944 under Stab/Flak Regiments 48 and 12 with 10 Flak Division in Tscherkassy
    - Till November 21st, 1.944 under Stab/Flak Regiments 4, 12 and 133 with 15 Flak Division (on October 2oth this unit served under V Flakkorps)

After he was hospitalized On July 31st, 1.944 and released from hospital around November 1.944 he was attached to Flak Ers Abt 1 from November 21st till the end of the war.

Now I will go into the details in the Soldbuch.

The photo gives you an idea that he was not a paper pusher.

His previous service is unknown and his sole wartime promotion was to Wahctmeister on February 1st, 1.943, confirmed by 3./Flak Rgt. 25 on March 15th.

His first visit to an Hospital were due some nasty infectious disease that took him out of action some time at the end of 1.942, nothing serious as he was back to his unit.

Then in September 1.944 he suffered for mental or nervous problems (I need help her, could a nervous breakdown fall into the 26 code?)

All aggravated with Tonsillitis and all together put him out of combat and road to an Ersat und Ausbildung unit.

With this at the end of the war he had again to fight and was given a pair of bins 7x50 with a Kar98k, a bayonet and ammunition, but not good enough so changed for an English MP with 3 magazines, I suppose he used an Sten.

As seen in his photo during his service he received an impressive array of medals.

Iron Cross 2nd class on June 27th, 1.940 by Luftgau 7
Flakkampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe on July 30th, 1.942 by 15 Flak Division
Erdkampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe on August 18th, 1.942 by 15 Flak Division
Ostmedaille on September 23rd, 1.942 by Flak Regiment 25
Iron Cross 1st class on August 31st, 1.942
German Cross in Gold on December 26th, 1.942 by Oberbefelshaber del LW
      Krimschild on March 20th, 1.943 by A.O.K. 11
      Flaktätigkeitsabzeichen on July 18th, 1.943 by I/Flak Regiment 25
Wound Badge in Black on November 9th, 1.944

All except the Wound Badge are stamped by Feldpostnummer L19248 that is 3./Flak Regiment 25.

Hope you like it as much as I am.

great work and great wehrpass ... the blue (and the "Flak" in particular) always give a great job (often without success) in research and reconstruction ... and for this reason they are among the most exciting ones ..... congrats!
        ciao Oriano

Thanks Oriano, I spent some very good hours searching about the Flak and is so demanding and intriguing I was catch. Hope I can find more info, we will see.

Anyone knows how many DKiG were awarded to LW Flak members? I know the number of RK thanks to the wonderful book about the Flak badges, but no idea with the DKiG.

354 if I am not mistaking in Book from SCherzer "Die TRaeger des Deutschen Kreuzes in Gold der Luftwaffe 1941-1945", considering that most Names are missing after June 1944. 500/550 seems IMO a good estimation.

Thanks Lionel, what a low number.

Why the record from mid 44 are lost? Were the archives destroyed or just bureaucracy problems?

The Heer german Crosses Listing are full till the end of the war. For the LW, it seems that late Archives 6-44 til 8.5.45 have been lost or burnt, have heard many different versions about that, but seems they are just speculations.
