and here Montecieco where on 20 th September 1944, the date of Hermann's Death, the German retrait turns into a tactical victory .... the Kampgruppe Stollbrok arrived in a hurry from Bologna, where it was in reserve, to try to stop the front, tends an ambush, to the Sherman of the Bays .... the 20 September 1944 will pass into the regimental history of the Bays as the "Balaklava of Rimini" : of the 52 tanks that attack Montecieco, only 18 survive ....

Hello Oriano !
Excellent presentation !
I am really impressed, how many details of the important battles you find and also, how you
bring together the then and now (and for both sides).
What makes this Wehrpass really uncommon, are the entries referring to the POW exchange.
And you managed to document the background of this little known event with excellent photos and infos.
Great job on this Wehrpass !
Best regards,
Archi

The subject of the exchange of prisoners is very intriguing: I started from another Wehrpass (I post as soon as I finish it) of a 98 ID Lieutenant seriously injured and captured in the church of San Savino on September 6, 1944 and exchanged at the end January 1945......
and thanks for the nice words Archi, especially because they come from a passionate and competent researcher!!
ciao Oriano

a classic of italian cuisine: Carbonara.......
and what does that matter with the liberation of Rimini?
the 22th September 1944, the day after the liberation of Rimini (with the city still under the shooting of mortars and German artillery) in Riccione a gala dinner is announced by the commander of the Canadian general troops Eedson Burns, at the Vienna Hotel of Riccione, his Headquarters, with special guests including Minister Harold MacMillan, generals Harold Alexader and Sir Oliver Leese.
The Canadian general can count on an exceptional chef, Renato Gualandi who invents (or more likely re-elaborates) an unforgettable Carbonara (Burns cites it in his memoirs) using British "military" ingredients, bacon cooked in a little butter, milk powder, melted cheese, egg-red powder, spaghetti sprinkled with a handful of freshly ground pepper, and bread with parsley to taste the very liquid carbonara sauce. Then after the war the butter will become oil, the egg-curls will be fresh, the bacon will become "guanciale", the melded cheese parmiggiano reggiano etc etc but the great classic italian dish remains ....
General Burns and Chef Renato Gualandi (died a few years ago) during a re-enactment of the great event in Riccione.......Last edited by mufasa; 09-24-2018, 03:08 AM.

First time a such such case of POW exchange, and written in the Wp. ! Very interesting. But he was not lucky of this exchange.
I love italian classic cuisine...
I agree! the exchange of prisoners between Germans and Allies is a very interesting subjet.... the British (and their Allies) must wait until end 1942/1943 when even they also capture many Germans (and Italians) prisoners in Africa ... but they are always small numbers of health soldiers (under protection of the Red Cross) and injured or disabled ....
