    My blue disease is back

At the beginning of this year I was infected with the dangerous blue fever and now I have another relapse and ended buying a wonderful Flak Soldbuch.

As our moderator said the best way to keep this forum alive is to show our pieces so here I go with my last acquisition, hope you like it as much as I do.

Our friend Michael Gschossmann was born in Munich on December 12th, 1.916.

Prior to the war he enlisted in the LW and was posted to a unit serving in his area, Flak Regiment 5, more precise to its 5th Battery.

There he has a quite time till May 1.940 when he was tasked to protect the units from the II Armeekorps while taking a stroll into the French country.

After some time enjoying the pleasure of France his superiors decided that the unit need a change and sent them to a different climate area, Bodö, Norway where he served from October 1.940 till the beginning of the Russian campaign that pit and end to his peaceful time in the north and puss him and his comrades to fight in Norway and Finland till July 1.942 when change strike again and the unit was moved to the South of Russia. there he fought till mid January 1.943 when he was evacuated and taken to Reserve Lazarett Kaplitz on January 19th with some problems with congelation and was discharged on February 9th and sent to Ersatztruppen. Interesting he served with a light flak unit in Belgium and France prior to being sent to be retrained in searchlights.

Looks like he changed the action of shooting planes to discovering planes so other can shoot at them and start serving with Flak Scheinwerfer Abteilung 578 (o) defending the industrial area of Heydebrech which had a concentration of fabrics important for the synthetic oil industry so it was bombed as part of the Oil Campaign starting in June 1.944.

Now start my problems to date his movements as he was transferred to the Heer, he started his service with the above mentioned unit on July 10th, 1.944 but no date given to his transfer to the Heer.

    Some clues:
    - Security Check on September 1st, 1.944 was done by 2./Flak.Schw.Abt. 578 (o)
    - He received equipment on September 21st from Marsch Kompanie Pz.Gren.Ers.Btl. 13
    - He was promoted to Stabsgefreiter on December 1st, 1.944 by II./Pz.Gren.Rgt. 30

Apart for that we know he served with:
    - v.Kp. II./Pz.Gren.Rgt. 30
    - Kraftl.Pk.Ausb.u.Ers.Abt. 8 Breslau
    - gem.Art.Ers.u.Ausb.Abt. (mot) 757 Kömerstadt
    - Stab I (mot) A.R. 1548

Not a bad resume for a brave soldier.

Due being a replacement I can only guess that he was promoted to Gefreiter on October 1st, 1.939 as he was changed in page 19 his paying grade.

Despite suffering frostbite he never received the Wound Badge in Black, maybe not severe enough thanks for him.

During his career he received the next decorations,

Iron Cross 2nd class on September 5th, 1.941
Kampfabzeichen del Flakartillerie on April 10th, 1.942
    Ostmedaille on August 12th, 1.942
Erdkampfabzeichen del Luftwaffe on March 25th, 1.943
The first three were stamped by L00792 (5./Flak Regiment 5)

For curiosity he received for a short time a French M16 rifle with bayonet an ammunition on August 8th, 1.944 and returned it on the 29th of the same month to his unit at that time L62867 (Flakscheinwerfer Abteilung 578 (o))

As another curiosity you can see that the soldier decide that best way not to loose his driving license was to glue it to his Soldbuch so we have two documents in one.

Hope you like it and any comment or additional info is welcomed.

The last active unit was part of 548 V.G.D. and this unit was destroyed in April 1.945 around Königsberg near Pillau, any info about this is welcomed.

          Thanks

I think this is the model of rifle he was used with.

Sorry, big mistake, last combat unit is Artillerie Regiment 1458.

Now I need to research where this unit was in 1.945

                  Thanks

Thanks Angel for sharing this nice ID ! You are talking from A.R.1548, but if I am not mistaking, and even if my Eyes are quite tired today, I read "A.R.1458". Not many sources about it, Tessin indicates "Artillerie-Feldausbildungs-Rgt.1458", created march 45, in der Feldfpost Übersicht als Art.Rgt.1458. Attached to 158.Feldausb.Div., Troppau (Hgr.Mitte).

Yes Lionel, I make a mistake when writing in my notebook the last unit so this part of my research is wrong, he served with Artillery Regiment 1458 and not too much info about this unit.

Thanks and hope next week I cn show another Flak Soldbuch.

                        Dear Angel,

As we already discussed, it seems that he was most likely captured by the russians when fighting with the Artillerie-Regiment 1458. There's an annotation in the first page with the name of гросманн мичаел (Michael Grossmann) and therefore, he was captured or at least, registered by the russians.

Considering the information detailed by Angel, it is more likely that he ended as a Prisioner of War. Maybe someone has some information regarding the unit or a POW list which would be really useful to determine the soldier's fate.

                        Best regards,

                        Josep (Barkhorn1)

Reading Lexicon Der Wehrmacht I can ses that I./Flak Regiment 5 was quite successful. From June 22nd till August 5th, 1.941 45 kills, till October, 81 and from the beginning of war 106 kills.
