WP Hans Schöler, Cavalry School Krampnitz, K.I.A. Führer-Grenadier-Brigade 1944 !

As you all Guys know, our prefered forum is facing a hard time coming mainly from reccurring technical problems. The bast way to demonstrate our commitment to this very unique collectors community throughout the world is perhaps just... well... sharing Stuff we own !
I recently had the opportunity to purchase a nice collection of ID’s which once belonged to a deceased german friend of mine. Some of them are matching with my research areas, I am happy to present you one today…
Hans-Gerd SCHÖLER was born 1919 in Schwetz a.d. Weichsel, moved then with its family to Paderborn, where its Father was a Doctor. He obviously was attracted by the military world and volunteered at the age of 17…. He had to wait some months and served first within the Service of Labour (R.A.D.)before being accepted into the I.(Reiter) Abt./Kav.Rgt.15 in Neuhaus Kreis Paderborn. A part of this cavalry Unit was used to create the Cavalry Squad from 169th Reco Group (Aufkl.Abt.169, 69.I.D.) on 26.8.39. Shortly after it, he became an officer-candidate at the Cavalry School at Krampnitz by Potsdam, and was part of the 2nd Session organized there (2.Offiziers-Anwärter-Lehrgang, Reiter Einheiten) from oct.1939 to January 1940. Coming back to the A.A.169 with the rank of a Lieutenant, in was in charge of forming recruits at the Kav.Ers.Abt.15 – still at Paderborn – and escaped then to the French campaign.
He really discovered the war with the Kradschützen-Btl.61 (11.Pz.Div.), from 8.40 until 18.11.41, taking part to the Balkan campaign and in Russia thereafter. The detailed List of the battles he took part can be seen page 32. He was lightly wounded twice, first in Berditchew and 2 weeks later in Stawitscheche. The third wound war more serious (18.11.41 in Jaswischtsche… if I decipher correctly this Russian place…). He was then in Hospital in Germany and was only fit to join a Front Unit in June 42. For a short time at the S.R.93 then Headquarter of the 13.Pz.Gren.Brigade. If anybody is able to give me more infos about this Brigade, I would appreciate it. He fell ill at the end of nov.42, a bad case of jaundice . Probably its Health was too weak to join the Front immediately, he was sent to “Fahnenjunker-Lehrgang 2 der Panzertruppe” from april 43 until august 1944. Interesting is the fact Schöler wrote unofficially the function he had within the Unit with a Pen at the right of the Page… Quite complicated to decipher, I read “Aufsichts-Offizier und Lehrgang-Führer”. The terminology used at that time is rather confusing, but after a careful Study of the official documents I have about this (let me thank here my Friend ARCHI / Uwe for his great Help !), this “Fhj-Lehrgang 2 d. Pz.Truppe” was the official Name of the School in Krampnitz at that time. On 1944, Aug.20th he joined the “Stab Schwere-Abt./Führer-Grenadier Brigade” at the T.ü.P. Arys and sent to combat in eastprussia. The Brigade was heavily engaged on the road between Goldap and Gumbinnen, and around the village of DAKEN (Kreis Goldap) where Schöller was killed in Action 1944, oct.23rd.

Hope you apreciate it, all comments, any corrections or additions, are highly welcome !

                          Hello Lionel !

Indeed, very nice and interesting Wehrpass and related to both :
Some very interesting units and also to your Krampnitz topic as well ! Congrats !!
Also very nice connections, you were able to find !
(and I'm glad you could make use of some of the infos I sent).

Some remarks, infos and questions :
                          1.) Aufkl.Abt. 169 :
                          - Kdr. Major Joachim Macholz,
-- Chef of the Reiterschwadron was Rittmeister Rosenow.
The unit was located at Irrhausen in Sept. 39 and later in autumn 29 at Sinspelt (15km W of Bitburg).

                          2.) Regarding his service in 1942 :
Stab Schützen-Brigade, respectively (from mid 1942 on) Stab Panzergrenadier-Brigade, was simply a small HQ,
to control both Schützen/Pz.Gren-Rgts. of a Pz.Division. Kommandeur(CO) in 1942 was Oberst Crisolli (RKT).
The composition of this HQ can be found here :
                          https://www.wwiidaybyday.com/kstn/kstn541nov41.htm

The way of this Stab Pz.Gren-Brig. 13 is the same as that of 13. Pz.Div. in 1942. The battle calendar is :
                          15.08.-26.08.42 : Marsch zum Terek
27.08.-09.09.42 : Kämpfe im Terek-Gebiet (in September forming bridgeheads at Mosdok and Kisljar)
10.09.-22.10.42 : Angriffs- und Verteidigungskämpfe im grossen Terek-Bogen
You can find a map here (It is largely the same as that of III. PZ.Korps, which is shown in different colours):
                          http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...31&postcount=5

As in practice, those two Schützen-Rgts. were most often used independently in support of different Pz. units or
other Kampfgruppen, this kind of HQ was found obsolete and most of these Brig.-HQs were dissolved from late 1942 onward.

However, (typically for the German army), those small HQs were often used to lead small battlegroups.
One example is mentioned in the other thread : Kampfgruppe Kampfhenkel, formed from HQ Arko 3.
In this case here, a "Kampfgruppe Crisolli" was formed on 10.9.42, consisting of :
                          Stab Pz.Gren.Brig. 13, I./ and III./Pz.Rgt. 4, Pz.GrenRgt. 93, I./Pz.Art.Rgt 13, 1./PzJg.Abt. 13, 3./Pz.Pi-Btl. 4.
=> (It was supported by elements of II./Brandenburg).
Details of the achievements of this "KGr. Crisolli" can be found in: Tieke, Der Kaukasus und das Öl.
I cannot post a map, as my scanner doesn't work (not only the forum has technical problems).
So, here are some of the important places of action, South of river Terek :
Malgobek II - Werchn. Kurp - Illarinowka - Elchotowo (early October 42).
(In the course of these actions, Gen.Lt. Herr was wounded on 25.9. and Oberst Crisolli took over command of 13.PZ.Div.
=> Does anybody know, who replaced him as Kdr. of KGr. Crisolli ?!)

To outflank the Elchotowo position, III. Pz.Korps renewed its attack on 19.10., capturing Naltschik on 28.10. and the
                          13. PzDiv. finally reached the outskirts of Ordshonikidse (=Wladikawkas) in early November, but was totally exhausted by then.
On the 6.11., a massive Soviet counterattack started and finally ended in an encirclement (Kessel of Gisel).
On the night to the 11.11., (and on dusk again) the 13.Pz.Div. was able to break out of the cauldron, but with great
losses in men and material. It reorganized between Alagir and Ardon but already was involved in heavy combat again end of November.

A radio message from Pz.Gren.Rgt 93 to the HQ 13. Pz.Div. on 12.11. summarizes the situation quite well :
                          >> Leistungsgrenze des Soldaten, z. Zt. tagelang ohne Essen, erreicht. Schnelle Abhilfe diese Zustands dringendst. <<
(The soldiers limit of performance is reached (currently without rations for several days). It is of utmost importance,
that immediate measures are to be taken.)

I would consider it possible, that the illness of Oberlt. Schöler (jaundice) was inflicted by these conditions.
(Sorry for the long digression, but these battles always caught my attention ).

                          => 3.) Speaking of "finding connections" :
There is a group of "Brandenburger", assisting several times in the advance of KGr. Crisolli.
I would think that you own a photo/group, that shows some of these men (Planowskoje is just N of Elchotowo):
                          http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...=Brandenburger

4.) What I would also be interested in :
To which Abteilung of the Führer-Grenadier-Brigade was he posted ?!
This unit underwent so many organizational changes after mid 1944, but I could not find the designation "schwere Abteilung".

                          Best regards,

                          Archi
