the Bergepanzer III are very rare in Italy (few specimens were inside the Divisions with the Panzer or the Stug), while the main veichle for tank recovery wagon of these "panzer first aid" unit was the Sd.Kfz 9 (Sonderkraftfahrzeug), and every Panzer-Kraftwagen-Werkstatt-Kompanie was equipped with 5 "Famo"....
some of these in action at Anzio.....Attached Files

And if something was changed, it should be signed or stamped for.
In this case new stamps should be added on the picture and a note on page 3, with signature.
Do you think this photo was added during the war?
Can you show page 2 and 3 of the Soldbuch?
By the way, you say that the picture was changed after his promotion.
The document says that he was promoted in November/December 1943.
Pictures in Heer Soldbücher were added mostly in early to mid 1944.
So when his first picture was added, he already was a Feldwebel.I'm collecting anything related to the towns Castricum and Bakkum during WWII.

he meant that the photo is not the one that was originally applied to the soldbuch.
His promotion to feldwebel was before photos were inserted so in theory he would have had a feldwebel photo applied when the photos were added to soldbücher in 1944.
Look at the stamps not going overr the photo in this case. It was added post war.
He might be him even but we ll never know for sure unless we see more photos of him.

Hello !
Interesting Soldbuch of an interesting unit !
I have a small group of a soldier, who was with a Panzer-Bergezug in a Pz.-Instandsetzungs-Abt.
From the research I have done in connection with it, I can only confirm what Oriano already wrote :
Berge-Panther and Berge-Panzer III were mostly assigned to the tank units, while the Berge-Kp. had
to rely on the Sdkfz. 9 (Famo Schlepper).
Of course, it would be great, if someone has more detailed info on the vehicles, equipment etc. of these Berge units,
or could even show a strength report of a Panzer-Berge-Kompanie (or Pz.-Berge-Zug) !
I couldn't find one so far ...
Regarding the two Berge units of this soldier :
Panzer-Berge-Kompanie 5 was likely formed in 1943. Although formally authorized company strength,
it never was more than a Zug (platoon).
This explains the Panzer-Bergezug 5 entry on the Bestallungs-Urkunde.
In mid 1944, this Pz.Bergezug 5 became the 1. Zug/Pz.Berge-Kp. 9 (and Pz-Berge-Kp. 5 was disbanded).
This explains the change in unit designation (5 => 9), without any change of the Kr.Stamm-Rollen Nr.
It is very difficult to find infos on these Heerestruppen in general, and especially on the Inst.-units.
It would be interesting to see more pages of this Soldbuch. Perhaps than it is possible to clarify the
different transition dates more precisely !
Best regards,
Archi

This Soldbuch has come in my possession, here some better scans. The portrait photo has obviously been replaced but matches all the content in the Soldbuch perfectly... I'm pretty convinced it must be him. Notice his early deployments with Pz.Abt.40 in Norway and, especially for Lionel , Pz.Rgt.35.

Hello !
Thanks for sharing those additional pages !
Early Pz.Rgt. 35 might indeed be interesting (especially for the 4. Pz.Div. addicts among us );
But I think the Pz.Abt. 40 z.b.V. is even more special !
And on p. 20, you even have the confirmation that he was in Norway.
Also interesting to see the entries on p. 12.
Best regards,
Archi
