    Dirlewanger Dog Tag Opinions

Everytime I see one of these tags I'm always a little skeptical about them but I've done a lot of reading on these. This one meets the description of an original but I would like to get some opinions on this one.

Any experts out there? Really like it but want to hear something...

This doesn't look like it was aged on purpose does it? It takes a long time in the ground for a zinc dogtag to look like this right? It looks like the corrosion is formed over the stamps, another good sign right?

Nobody can give me a clue if it's an original or not? ...I don't own the tag, I'm just interested in it.

The inscription is shallowly minted and difficult to compare to the originals. The soldier's digits look good. It may be original, but it is not "one looker item".

I have it now and wanted to post a better picture showing the details a little better. The font to me looks good which has the same wobble in "DIRLEWANGER" that I see with the originals in all the right places. It's lighter and thinner than a normal dog tag and I looked at the inside of the letters with a magnifying glass and the corrosion is buried in between the numbers and letters. I'm very confident it's a good one and I'm very happy to own this piece!! Thanks again to the seller!!

I can only say - has anyone asked himself how is that possible that tags of one of the most obscure units of W-SS became suddenly one of the most common SS tags on the market? Is that actually possible that a big number of tags with whatever numbers were recovered in one single place ( as the legend says) despite Dirlewanger unit was destroyed and soldiers were struggling hard to survive.
And yes - most of these "new" tags somehow ( but I won't tell the details to make ones who make them lifes harder) differ from the old originals that were recovered at Halbe and POW camps in Western Poland many years ago.

I don't recall lately see many come up for sale at all. I see one right now on a dealers site and they want crazy money for it. I checked all the posts on this forum and I found about 25 pictures of different Dirlewanger dog tags that people mostly overseas consider being real, I don't think that's many at all in my opinion. It seems to me if these are fakes, I would see a lot more of them. Do you think mine has a chance of being a good one or have you changed you mind on these and you don't believe in them anymore? Have you ever seen one of these pulled from the ground or knew someone close to you that has being that you live in Poland? I actually thought you were one of the collectors that believed in these tag after reading through the threads. The fakes that I have seen or at least what is considered a fake just have a look that screams fake to me; faked aging, wrong font, etc..etc...Anyway, I don't want to get into a slugging match with anybody over these tags like I've seen happen on threads, I just wanted to know what people thought of mine that's all.I guess I believe in the legend and what some of the good people in Europe are saying about these...

                            Very shortly.
                            1. Yes I have believed in these tags until they started coming up in dozens.
                            2. I have 100% original tag from old times in my collection and I have used it as a reference together with a couple other tags I'm 100% positive about ( recovered in POW camps in Poland and also over 20 years ago in Halbe pocket)

                            3. I won't disclose details of my investigation but I have found some serious differences between these old tags and the new ones that started appearing over last couple of years ( belive me, I have some forensic professional background).
                            4. Considering above I'm very sceptical about these new tags, despite they have perfect ageing and great appearance.
                            5. I don't know and I won't tell if your tag is good or bad basing on picture only. I surrender to judge this with this tag using pictures and bare eye.

I sure wish you would post a pic of yours so i can compare an original old one next to my'new' one, I'm not sure what that means? New meaning just now popping up on the market?
