    Obergefr. WP killed 22-06-1941

    Hello all,
Some weeks a go I bought this pass I was interested because of the entrie ‘festung holland’. After a close look and some help. I discover he was not participating in the fight by Festung Holland. Although he was not in Holland and the WP seems a bit empty I love this pass. The reason for loving it is the day he was killed. Obergefrieter Arndt participating as a member of the 2. Radfahr-Schwadron Aufklarungs-Abteilung (255. Infanterie-Division) in the operation Barbarossa. He was killed the very first day of the operation at 22-06-1941 in Maloryta. The WP is not a top of the bill pas, but imo even those passes are nice to have and those are not easily to find. Hope you will enjoy it.

We should not forget that you are holding someone's fate in hand. Loving it because he was killed on a special date is a bit obscure I guess. I hope you will be remembered for other reasons some day and not for dying on a certain day or date.

Maybe not the right words to describe it. I'm not happy that he was killed. Imo it makes the pass intresting .

He came from Quenstedt, a very small village (today about 800 inhabitants), today part of the

town Arnstein , Landkreis Mansfeld-SĂ¼dharz (County) in Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt) and he

was a farmer and the only son of a farmer.

And this is his Volksbund entry:

              Nachname: Arndt
              Vorname: Hilmar
              Dienstgrad: Obergefreiter
              Geburtsdatum: 28.07.1914
              Geburtsort: Quenstedt
              Todes-/Vermisstendatum: 22.06.1941
              Todes-/Vermisstenort: Maloryta

His grave is still unknown in the Brest - Belarus area.

Stranger yet, would be that he was killed so early in the campaign, yet his body was never found? I talked to many vets who said after an engagement, all manner of help was recruited to comb fields and forests for the fallen, if it was practical.

A very sad but personal item to own, and fortunate that you have a photo of his grave etc with it. Agree with Ralle84 comment. Perhaps fortunately this soldier has the value of being of interest because of the uniform he wore and the enthusiasm of the present owner. I hope that the memory of his loss lasts a great deal longer.

He probably had a grave during the German occupation, but it was lost after the territory was lost to the Soviets. That was very common.

Yes, I read through the thread too fast, I didn't see there was a photo of his grave. I am sure the HeldenFriedhoff was destroyed by the soviets so that's why he is showing as no grave today. I assumed at first he had fallen on 22.6 and no one was able to recover his body. That would have been strange as the Germans employed all sorts of manpower to recover fallen and missing soldiers so early in the war.
