Small estate Wehrpass, photos, Stalingrad, A.A. 113

This sad estate was the week, Wehrpass is a duplicate, as his unit was drowned in the boiler of Stalingrad. He himself was wounded at Stalingrad on 15/10/1942 and thus escaped the cauldron. Maybe someone would be so friendly and Could explain why he has later been awarded an Infantry Assault Badge for ASA? The single picture of him in tank uniform I find very nice.

    Have fun while looking.

    Greetings Sniper

I was quite surprised that this Thread so few Reactions from the Paper Collector Community. Anyway, I get in touch with Dominic, the Owner, and made a good and honest Trade for us both. First, thanks to this Forum to allow us such Opportunities.

The First interesting point for me was the french Name of this Officer : MARGERIE. As its religion is Protestant, I assume he could be a descendant of a "Huguenot" Family (I don't know the proper Term in English), say the french Protestants Victims of Prosecution during the second half of the 17th Century. Lot of them found a new Home in Prussia, Silesia, and other Parts from the today Germany § Poland.

I have written to different Persons in Germany to have confirmation of that.

The second interesting Point for me was that Wilhehm MARGERIE belonged to the very first Promotion of Officer Candidates at the Kavallerie-School KRAMPNITZ, which is one of my Area of Collecting.... Note the Entry on Page 12 : "Kavallerie-Schule, Lehrstab. 1.Offizier-Anwärter Lehrgang". As I have in my Archiv a (bad) Pic from this 1st Promotion (directed by Hptm VOLK, Kav.Rgt.5), I let my Wife who had great Eyes for this kind of Researches carefully study all Pics.... Margerie is the Guy I have marked in red on the Photo thereafter. .. (my apologize : my scan is too heavy to be entirely imported, so for the Moment just the Face I think recognize Wilhelm Margerie...)

The 3rd Point of interest for me is of course that he "shortly" served by the 4.Pz.Div. and met his fate there....

The day were he was KIA is mentioned as a CC Day, and signed by Captain Rudolf Kendler.... THis makes me happy, just for the reason that I personally had the Opportunity to met Mr. Kendler twice in 1997 and 1998, and get the Stuff he still had at his Home in Köln... Note its Signature don't show many Changes after all these Years...

I especially adore when some new Stuff I get makes a "link" to other Documents or Groupings of my collection, the real Document Collectors will for sure understand what I mean !

                      Happy for you my friend.

It always nice to see this connections between soldiers serving together.

                      Keep going

By the Way, Mr. Kendler some Months before I met him, had already given to another (german) Collector his SB-Duplicate from 1944 and some various Stuff... If anybody knows who's the happy Owner, I would be glad to get an Information, here or through P.M..... A trade would be probably not impossible !! Here is the first Page (I just have BW Copies from it :-(

Hello Lionel (and Sniper 86) !

This is surely a very interesting group ! I must have overlooked it completely ...
And excellent work by Lionel, to discover the connection to Hptm. Kendler !

Regarding the WP of Rittmeister Margerie :
I totally agree on the likely descendancy of a "Hugenotten" family.

There are also some other interesting entries in the WP, on p. 20 :
                              1) 16.10.37 - ... Kriegssch.[ule] Potsdam :
It seems after 1 year service with his unit (Kav.Rgt. 17), he stayed at that school for roughly 1 year.
I couldn't find much info on that school, so I do not know, whether it was only for Officer candidates
or also for NCOs in general.
It seems that pre war, there were only 5 of those Kriegsschulen located in :
Potsdam, München, Hannover, Wiener Neustadt, and Dresden
This list is very similar to a list of Heeres-Unteroffiziers-Vorschulen raised in 1940 :
                              http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...51&postcount=5
Perhaps someone knows, whether there is a connection/explanation ?!

                              2) After he had been commanded to that school, he was transferred on 9.9.38 to :
Stab Reiter... A.A. (Aufkl.Abt. ?!) Üb[ungs]Di.[ision] XIII. AK (raised in WK XIII), a unit very likely raised
in preparation of the annexation of the Sudetenland.
There is very little info available on this Übungs-Division XIII at all, but the entry confirms its existence,
and that it was formed already 3 weeks ahaed of the Munich treaty !

                              3) It seems, that after this Übungs-Division XIII. AK. was dissolved on 20.10.38, he also ended his two
years of service and went into the reserve.

                              4) when he was drafted again on 23.8.39, could it be that he was a member of the cadre personnel of the
1.Offizier-Anwärter Lehrgang at Krampnitz (that is, among the teachers resp. their helpers) ?
                              (Because it says "Lehrstab").

                              5) It is also interesting to see, that there is only a Radfahrschwadron 219 mentioned in the WP. The 183. Inf.Div.
had a combined version of Aufkl.Abt. and PzJg.Abt. (later designated as Schnelle Abt. 219),
where the Radf.Schwadron was always the 1. Kp. and 2.-4. Kp. were equipped with 3,7cm Pak.
                              (3. and 4. Kp. only raised in 1941).

Many thanks for sharing this and explaining the connection to another very interesting group of Hptm. Kendler !
I can understand that it is very exciting to make such discoveries !

                              Best regards,

                              Archi
