Thank you so much for documenting this soldier's service and fate, so that he
will not be forgotten! Your having sent a copy of his information to be entered
into the official German Volksbund records is especially nice -- thank you for doing this!

I see that Klaus was sent on leave from Schmallenberg to Berlin -- approximately 383 kilometers **northeast**, toward the Ostfront, in the last days of the war.
While it was good that he got to see his family one last time, I can only wonder:
if he had not been permitted leave, and had been sent to his unit instead of to Berlin, might he have survived the war?

On such small things, one's life can turn for good or bad.

It is especially a shame that he was killed so close to the end of the war, as so many on all sides were. He had certainly contributed his share of courage, blood and combat to the war effort -- it is a shame he couldn't have survived the last few days, and gone on to have a full, happy and well-deserved life!

Thank you again for sharing this story and preserving these documents and
Klaus's memory so that he will not be forgotten!
