Assistance with StG. 77 MOB nummer

    Hi all,

I have a Luftwaffe Erkennungsmarke which I think is one that belonged to a member of StG. 77, and was found by a fossicker in the old German POW Camp here in Victoria, at Murchison, the disc is marked:

    69058 / 30

The ' 30 ' is below the MOB number, and would be his personal ID, but would love to find out more details on the ' 69058 ' if possible.

Most of the POW's at the camp (Camp 13) were from the early war period, and mostly Battle of Britain or from north Africa, (with the exception of the survivors from the HK Kormoran), so if the disc is indeed from StG. 77 then the original owner would have probably been taken as a POW during the battle of Britain.

    Thanks for looking,

    Regards

    Bob

mob-finder.de says 69058 is 2./Stuka-Geschwader 77 so you were right on with the unit.

Thanks for the confirmation on the disc Andy, appreciate you taking the time to look it up and reply

I wish there was some way of actually finding out the name of the original owner, but sadly the German Archives won't pass that information out to anyone other than family.

It is at least comforting to know that the airman survived the way, and was returned to his homeland in 1946, I hope he had a rewarding post-war career.

      Thanks again, and best wishes

      Bob

I did put a request up quite some time ago about information regarding the airman that wore the ID disc, and I had forgotten about that, but after a search, I found some more information that I obtained via the German document archives. (I traded the disc off, but managed to get it back again yesterday)....

        From Germany:-

        <o></o>
Thank you very much for your inquiry over the internet for the discovered dog tag.<o></o>
Based on the transmitted label, I was able to identify the former wearer of the identification tag. The documents stated that he was staying at the Murchison VICTORIA detention center <o></o>
as a prisoner of war for the English Allies.<o></o>
He survived the war and the prisoner of war and made a request for compensation. The last contact between this former Luftwaffe member and the German office (WASt) took place in 1970.<o></o>
Since the former carrier recorded as the year of birth in 1918, it is unlikely that he is still alive today.<o></o>
Due to the data protection regulations, I am not authorized to provide you with the personal details. I ask for understanding.<o></o>
        Best regards
