The dog tag, and its stamping is totally different from the original ones.

I can only confirm - stamping is different than original.

So, your beginning to collect ID tags serious.. There is a lot to learn!
1st,,I'd say get every book out there you can get your hands on. Every book is not perfect,,but there is usually more good info than bad..

You also have forums such as this. Go to each ID tag site and go thru it from the beginning!
You can also look for the German Army book for abbreviations. Believe it or not they are pretty common. You'll usually see at least one at every decent show.

Study fonts! go to the link on this topic,,you'll see units like the SS Kavalerie most of the time will have the same font. You'll start see other units that follow with the same distinct fonts to their tags..

On SS tags you'll see that some of the early tags will have 'Waffen SS' on the reverse,,or SS-VT etc. etc. Know what they look like!

Know your materials. Authentic tags were made in Aluminum, Zinc, Stainless.. Study their thickness, how the rest of the tag looks. Like the Aluminum re en-actor tags the aluminum is too pure..Some fakes the thickness is off one way or the other.

Experiment! You will occasionally run in to blank Zinc tags out there. And usually good mechacnical shops will have a set of number/letter die stamps.. See what happens when you go to stamp a tag. Different surfaces, how hard to hit,,its interesting. You might even see the same mistake you made on a tag your going to buy!

There's many other things, wear, ageing, etc. Everyone has their ways.. I collected tags from the late 1970s to around 2000. Had many many tags. sold most off,,kept only 20 extra special tags for myself... You really got to stay current on the subject if your going to collect tags. You got to be in it to win it ,,SO..
                * Maybe some of the more experienced members will share their tips on what to look for..
                - sorry for the long post.. Good luck in finding cool tags,,Happy hunting!

If it is too good to be true, a rare, unusual tag then it probably is. There are many people making good copies and they can fool people. If in doubt always ask around for advise and avoid wasting yor money.
