You Never Know What Rare Things You may Find in Your Collection

I have collected Soldbuch's and Wehrpass's for a long time, I admit I have never taken the time to do any research, largely due to family coming first, but Ian Jewison gave me the idea to start going through and researching some of my books. Please meet Urban Thiersch, who comes from a long, distinguished line of German aristocrats.

His Mother was Fanny Hildebrandt, a famous painter, his Father Paul Thiersch a famous architect who was the head of a prestigious; training Europe's elite. You may recall the name Frieda Thiersch of Knights Cross folder fame, she is related. Gneisennau is part of this family.

Our man Urban served as an officer and was wounded in Russia and sent home, with a "Heimatschuss" where he served in the home army in Regensberg. It gets very interesting upon doing more research. The Stauffenburg family knew the Thiersch family well.

Due to this, Urban was friends with Claus, who in 1944 sought out Urban to help with the July 20th plot, wanting to make Urban his liaison officer after summoning him to Berlin. Please enjoy the photos and web articles:

Urban Thiersch and the 20. July 1944

in the year 1944 was it as a first lieutenant of the reserve boss replacement of a battery in Regensburg. Peter Hoffmann describes a coming off of the admission Urban Thierschs into the circle around Claus's count gives from Stauffenberg and the resistance against the national socialism as follows: „Fahrner knows, said Claus Stauffenberg that he wants to expose as few ones as possible to the danger of the fall, but he needs a reliable officer, who he the boss of the office foreign country / defense of the OKW, Colonel integrated into the Central Reich Security Office d.G. Hansen, to the side to place can, which is too much surrounded by informers. Fahrner called first lieutenant Urban Thiersch, which sculptors, in Russia heavily wounded, got used to now boss of a spare battery in Regensburg. Stauffenberg beorderte Thiersch by telegram to Berlin and received it at the 1. July, like already Fahrner, with the words: `Going we into medias res, I operates the high treason with all me the available means. ' “

Sound Peter Hoffmann existed Thierschs function within the circle of the conspirators in the function of a contact man: „At the 1. July said Claus Stauffenberg to a friendly sculptor, the artillery first lieutenant Urban Thiersch, which came as a contact man Stauffenbergs to Colonel Hansen, at which unentrinnbar hopeless military situation can the revolution nothing change, but still much blood pouring could prevented it and the disgrace of the present government are eliminated. “

Eberhard Zeller mentions Urban Thiersch under the name „the other [n] young [n] took part [n] [20. July 1944], which are to be called around and with Haeften and with Stauffenberg “. It does not deal however with Thierschs position or function more in greater detail. According to data of Urban Thierschs adoptive son, Professor. Paul Thiersch, should be father in the last days before the assassination attempt Stauffenberg as a personal aide to have served. Rudolf Fahrner indicates in its „memories 1903 - to 1945 “that Urban Thiersch was assigned to Colonels Hansen as Ordonanzoffizier. This source, together with the specified already above, suggests at least that Thiersch possessed deep views and per finds of knowledge of the assassination attempt plans owing to its personal and quite close contacts to central participants of the assassination attempt (like evidently to Stauffenberg).

Contrary to the main participants the conspiracy Thiersch, because of its relatively unknown entangling, could escape after the failure of the assassination attempt of pursuit and execution. Since Eberhard Zeller indicates the fact that Thiersch carried out „from 1937 to 1945 Dienstpflicht and war service “suggests that he must successfully have succeeded in extracting itself each suspicion. Rudolf Fahrner describes my life with Offa “the exact circumstances of the successful escape Thierschs in its „before the Gestapobehörde: „Urbans planned working was not Hansen come to the course there to 20. July was absent. That was arrested and a new SS boss had taken over the defense meanwhile. Urban its back transfer after its location and the new leader requested there had eightless agreed. Urbans regiment aide in Regensburg had destroyed the telegram to its transfer to Berlin and it the only still permitted `hunt vacation' for eight days had assigned. “ „Hunt vacation “Urban Thiersch used its to pierce itself to its friend Rudolf Fahrner and its sister Gemma Wolters Thiersch to „the house at the lake “ in Überlingen. To 15. or 16. September 1945 should Alexander count gives of Stauffenberg, which survivors of the three Stauffenberg brothers, likewise at the Bodensee to only arrive and member of the Überlinger „house at the lake “- community become.

It appears from further research, that Urban was able to distance himself from the failed plot, going on a vacation till the end of the war. Surviving when so many did not. After the war he became a famous sculptor and did the Stauffenburg brothers memorial.

I bought this off of Estand a few years ago and had no idea of the historical significance of this Soldbuch. I thought this was just a officer who won the Iron Cross 1st Class.

So here is the last pages showing his awards. being from an esteemed German Noble family I have to wonder if his award of the EK1 had more to do with this name than it did merit. based on other reading I have done, so it is my opinion, however It appears he wasn't rated very highly by those who were in combat and saw front line action, as seemed to be true of many aristocrats serving in the armed forces.

Here is a piece from the Stauffenburg memorial site:

Urban Thiersch was born on 17 August 1916 in Halle an der Saale. After his father's death, the family moved to Potsdam. During this time he began to work with sculptures in wood, stone and clay. After graduating in 1935, he completed a stonemasonry in Berlin and worked in a plaster mold.
From 1937 to 1945 he served as an officer in the Wehrmacht. After a serious wound in Russia, he served in the replacement army. In 1944 he was the reserve chief of a spare battery in Regensburg. Through the recommendation of Rudolf Fahrner, he was transferred to Berlin by the hand of Claus Schenk Count von Stauffenberg, G. Hansen, the head of the Foreign Office / Defense Department of the OKW, who was integrated into the Reichsicherheitshauptamt.
The sculptor, who was both a friend of Fahrner and the brothers Stauffenberg, served as a liaison between Claus Schenk Count von Stauffenberg and Hansen, and thus belonged to the circle of the young participants of July 20th. After the failure of the assassination, Urban Thiersch escaped the persecution.

From 1948 to 1951 he studied as a master student with Prof. Joseph Wackerle at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In the following years he undertook several study trips, among others. To Spain, Kleinasien and Greece. Most recently he lived in Oberschönau on the Königssee and on Juist. Urban Thiersch died on September 8, 1984.

Google translator, lol. There are lots of articles on the internet about him, his parents, and ancestors. There is a book that is on the net that I could not copy and paste that goes into 3 pages of details about his relationship with the Staufenburg's and bomb plot. If I remember right, his sister or cousin was married to someone else in the cell of conspirators. This family seemed to be split with some very loyal, like Frieda and a few who were upset that Hitler never reinstated the monarchy, so they wanted to overthrow him when the war got out of hand.

I googled a guy I had the Wehrpass to years ago....nothing....did it again some years later and there numerous links to him.....his close friend was a martyr to the cause and a friend of Horst Wessel......a reasonably interesting Wehrpass suddenly became exceedingly interesting.......I posted it on here somewhere......

You are quite right Ian, a post you commented on got me thinking of doing research on some of my books. I started with this one since his father was professor, and many professors are published due to research etc. I was pleasantly surprised to see he was on the net, then all of a sudden the July 20th connection jumped out at me talking about the son, then the search was on. There is a lot on the internet about Urban and the Thiersch family.
