Meaning of ID tag inscription L.W.I.R

    Hi guys

Does anyone know what the tzo following ID tag inscriptions mean?
    - 10 L.W.I.R.444 perhaps Landwehr?
    - 8./L.A.(E.)R.262 perhaps Leicht Artillery Ersatz Regiment?

    Thanks

    JL

The second one could be "Infanterie Ausbildungs- und Ersatz Regiment 262"

          Hello !

I think that Jean-Loup might be right with both his suggestions :
          1) Inf.Rgt. 444 (originating from Landwehr)
          http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...nter/IR444.htm

          2) I think the L strongly points to some Arty unit. In addition, if the EKM was issued after
October 1942, the sequence should be (E)uA instead A E. Therefore I would think it is this one :
          http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...rsAbt262-R.htm
and that the EKM was issued before Oct. 1942.
While the Lexicon entry mentions only two battalions, they were subordinated to a regimental HQ 262.
          (see attachement).

          Best regards,

          Archi

P.S.: Ian was faster and I forgot to mention that the Gliederung is dated Oct. 1940

Archi, I believe you are correct on both counts, thanks both you and Ian for the help.
The artillery tag indeed is probably early war.

Interestingly the Landwehr tag is numbered very low, 3, so I would guess it is for an officer from that unit.
