Many of those transferred to the 1 Ski-jäger Brigade\division from GJ units kept wearing their edelweiss on both caps and jackets, but then again that unit was regarded as being part of the gebirgstruppe anyway.

Actually, there's a related question you guys might know the answer to.
Did GJ corps troops have waffenfarbe backing on their sleeve edelweiss? ie. black for pionier, red for artillerie etc. I ask because i've seen several patches for sale around the place with such backings or edging but i'm more than a little suspicious of them.

Initial regulations specified that transfer to non-mountain units the edelweiss had to be removed. However there was always a strong tendency to retain the badges after transfer. By an order dated 12 November 1944 the wear of the edelweiss was permitted even after transfer to non-mountain unit provided that the wearer had previously served in combat with a mountain unit.

        Hello Simon,

That is a good question. None that I can see from the many studio photos/snapshots ect... I have. I also have an original and early bergmutze edelweiss with the dark green backing sewn to it. Imo, sleeve insignia of the period came issued only with the standard dark green backing. Sounds like those mentioned are possibly post-war?

          Hi Simon,

I know someone in the south of Germany that says he has one from the Gebirgs Artillerie with the red piping original sewn on the Edelweiss. We'd have to find a vet that can verify if these ever were worn. So far, I have not found any photographic evidence either.

Edward, the dark green backing on the Bergmütze Edelweiss was done by the Gebirgsjäger themself. Some say, only personell from Austrian origin wore this backing, others say only members of the 1. Gebirgs Division. The vets that I spoke said every one could deceide to wear it in that manner.

          MfG,
          Bart

            Hello GJR 100,

Photos from early war period books of Austrian Gebirgsjäger show that entire units wore the green backing with Edelweiss on the Bergmütze. This confirms the perfered method of wear, at least during that period as standard regulation by early units of the Austrian Gebirgsjäger.

              Grüß Di' Edelweißträgers,

Here are some 'Piped' Edelweiß in my collection. The watch fobs with the metal cap Edelweiß and piping sewn around the leather fob, I beleive to be wartime. The piped Edelweiß sleeve patches are questionable as to if they are wartime or post-war. Could be early Bundeswehr, since later BW sleeve patches incorporated the various Waffenfarbe. The Bundeswehr Gebirgsjägers also back their cap Edelweiß with their unit Waffenfarbe.

                    Hi Patrick
Those are the same style arm patches i've been offered and seen for sale on militariaweb and other places.
