    Grenadier Regiment F(?) information

    Hi all,

I am looking for information about Grenadier Regiment F (or does it stand for something else?). The Soldbuch belonged to someone who was KIA on 20.01.1945, so I want to know where he was killed. He is buried in Kehl according to Volksbund, but it does not state where he died. I would really appreciate some help.

    Best regards,
    Paul

    I concur with Rick

Kehl is on the other side of the Rhine from Strasbourg the sector where the 19. Armee fought at the time.

Thank you, I did not notice that the previous owner had asked the same question. Very helpful information. So it is likely he died somewhere in/around Staßburg.

        Hi all !

In general I agree with the statements of naxos resp. Rick Admiraal .

Considering the timeframe and the date he died, it is very likely that this soldier was a member
of Btl. II./F, which is mentioned in the FMS report by Generalleutnant Seeger (Kdr of Div.Nr. 405).

In this report, he mentions the formation of a "Gruppe Marbach" on 27.12.1944, consisting of Btl. II/F
(led by a Hptm. Morg) and two other battalions.
This group (of regimental strength) assembled on the next day in an area near Lauf-Memprechtshofen-Achern
        (~10km NE of Strassburg).

This battlegroup then took part in the German effort to build a bridgehead at Gambsheim, and crossed the river Rhine
on 6.1.45, all beeing part of "Operation Nordwind". The battalion of Hptm. Morg fought in the Gambsheim area
for about 3 weeks, before it had to withdraw across the Rhine again.

Are there any entries regarding to a wounding/Laz. stay ?

        Best regards,

        Archi

          Hello Archi,

thank you! That is some really useful information. There are no entries for his fatal wound. The first page is crossed out with 'Gefallen am 20.1.1945' so I think he died (almost) instantly. I think otherwise they would have written down 'Gestorben' instead of 'Gefallen'. He had just returned from an earlier wound and was re-equipped on the 5th of December 1944.

            Hello Paulus_Gun !

Thanks for giving the additional info, especially on the formation date of his unit .
I could not find any infos on this unit for 20.1.45, but in general, the Germans tried to expand
their bridgehead between 18.1. - 21.1., so it is quite possible, that he fell during those actions.

            Best regards,

            Archi
