      Hi,
For once in my life I think it was a reasonable price and I'm a tight old git? how many True D-day related items do we really see lots are associated ?
Iv'e turned down far more money than this for my D-day helmet ,If it had been the same name as it I would have bought it in a heart beat.

I would like to say congrats on the sale! An epic Soldbuch!
You clearly don't know what you are saying. The unit fought there yes.. However he could've been anywhere. I'm researching German units for years now and digging in archives / paper material.. Many personnel from units went on courses, holidays, tasks, duties that had to be done, sickness .. Just as in today's armed forces in which I serve .. That was not all written in the soldbuch.. So although his unit was there, there is a possibility that he wasn't near Utah on 6.6. but some ... miles away and captured there. Not saying he wasn't at Utah, as he could've been.. But there is nothing in the Soldbuch that said he did or did not.. Also "epic" soldbuch, it would've been if there was an award written in it for D-Day.. 2000 EUR price is still high, and congratz that he sold it.. But in my opinion if this is today's price.. You've to sell all Soldbücher for 2000 EUR or those who served on the Eastern Front because of what they have been through.. But since he sold it.. I think the hype is set now and various other people will now ask 2000 EUR for a standard D-Day soldbuch. 3000 EUR with award? .. Going to be rich when I sell some of my SB / WP will Ardennes Offensive go for the same price? I'm so stupid that I sell / sold for fair prices to other collectors. Silly me.

Nobody is a beginner here - and the likely hood of him not being at his unit without the correct stamps entered is slim.

What does it mean to dig in archives and read paper material everyday, I am not stranger too, and I am also a 'ex serviceman'... and own plenty of Soldbücher, frequent plenty of shows, and mull through thousands of paper items, also for research purposes...

Its funny how WAF always comes down to trying to show whos more experience, what relevant is the fact the guy has a overwhelming evidence of being there...

I have soldbuchs here that have entries right up until the very end! For silly things like bicycle permits to medals awarded on dates where the unit is meant to be destroyed!

As for the medal entry - well I dont buy Soldbuchs because they won a medal in a specific time or place, its good enough when the unit is there and no evidence says he was anywhere else!

I think there is a lot of people dont get it, but its fine and well for medal collectors to charge what they want for rare maker marks (which I find idiotic but done take the piss out of them... ! )..

But something with a overwhelming chance of being on the spot on the day, is put down and the seller taken the piss out of with snarly remarks, like congratz I will be rich when I sell mines!

Epic - interpretation is key - Find me a KG Mohnke Soldbuch from the battle of Berlin 1945 and I wont care if he won a medal or not... in my eyes its still epic.

Sadly WAF has become a place full of 'righteous' and 'doo gooders'...

I want to put a simply question.....can you tell me why helmets collectors pays Normandy camo helmets three times more than a normal value price? In this case no one move any observation. Each one of us is free to ask the price he wants and if a buyer is ready to pay, there will be for sure reason.

Chris, I'm not disagreeing or agreeing with you for anything else, just wanted to put input into this thread which was started by InfanterieSammler. Ofcourse everyone has his own opinion. However this has nothing to do with "experience" and who got the biggest. I don't mind him asking 2000 EUR, although my opinion is that is it totally not worth it. However I'm glad this occurred as it made me thinking what prices I now can ask for my own collection, thinking about a new car.. No kidding and I have some 'epic' Soldbücher / Wehrpasse myself. So actually I'm happy that someone did put this price up, in return I can do the same now. I always hold myself back to do it but reading these replies I guess I sold everything to cheaply and no-one cares about the price asked.

It should be a healthy discussion on a "what's it worth", sadly people always have to agree with the majority. As I feel like you call me a "righteous" or "doo gooder" etc. now or that I "piss" on someone. I thought this was a friendly discussing however the name calling starts already. I myself don't participate on WAF any more (such as the reason mentioned before) as you can see in my latest posts however I thought to put some input into this thread as It became a major discussing (in e-mails / fora ..) so I thought maybe for once a thread on WAF could becoming a friendly discussion..

However what major evidence is there that he was at Utah? There is none. Same as for the evidence that he wasn't there, there is none.. So how could you 100% say for sure he was there / not there? It would be interesting to find him in archive in NARA to see where / when etc. he was taken prisoner. Don't state things if you don't know them for 100% certainty. If his WP was available and the fightings were written into the book, then you know more yet you can't back the facts up at this point.

I mostly collect Paper material so I don't know about prices for helmets or medal collectors.. so I cannot say anything however I wouldn't pay those x3 normal worth prices either.

"Epic - interpretation is key - Find me a KG Mohnke Soldbuch from the battle of Berlin 1945 and I wont care if he won a medal or not... in my eyes its still epic. " .. Now that is something different .. That would be an epic soldbuch, just because the chances to find such is 1/10 from a D-Day soldbuch. I only mentioned for the award so at least you know he saw some action at D-Day for ex. so you have at least some more certainty he was there.

I think this healthy discussion has finished....everyone has a different opinion and that is that.

For the new and younger collectors what we had years ago is no longer there for the prices we paid, so they will pay higher for something they want as in their eyes it is rare. For us older guys it pisses us off as the price is way high as we probably have better and paid much less......I would love to get a fighter pilot RKT for £230 again...chances are slim but you never know?!?!

Some prefer, blondes, some prefer brunettes and some prefer same!!! We are all different and people should remember that before making comments.

Personally I think 2000 euro is an insane price for that soldbuch, I buy a RK fighter pilot soldbuch with many kills for that much and some think that was high price!
I rather my soldbuch from a guy on the eastern front with some awards won near Moscow and it costs almost a tenth of the price.

But hey that's just my opinion, and it would be pretty boring if we all liked the same things, all drove the same cars etc.

I have some fighter pilot soldbuch's from guys who have no awards/kills but it is enough for me just that they are flying Bf 109 of FW190 against superior numbers and are mentioned as an air loss or shot down, I don't care about awards at all in these books, but some people say they are no good pilots and wouldn't want them. Maybe they're not the best pilots, who knows, but makes no difference to me, I just like them because they were there, it's history.

As long as you are happy with your purchase is all that matters

The market has changed for Soldbuchs thats for sure...

People are specialized it not about medals anymore like you said, its about specific things... I pay a premium on good Berlin 1945s...

As for the RK Pilot at 2K if you want your money back contact me!

                      Nice things cost money...

It is very much each to their own.

Would I personally pay that much for the soldbuch in question? The answer is no. Not because I think it is too much but simply because it is not my field of interest and I would not know its true value?

Would I pay that much for a good Gestapo/Kripo Soldbuch? Probably, as it is my area of collecting and because I know how incredibly rare such material is. And even though SiPo soldbucher have little to no entries in them whatsoever, they are worth a lot due to their rarity.

The serious SiPo collector and the serious SB collector who would like just one SiPo SB example in their collection may drop €2k on a piece, but would anyone else? Probably not but that is no reflection on whether the price is too high or not.
