Hi Victor, I know that I have answered this question before, (when posed by Mike in the Uniforms forum) and it is only my best guess but I think it is the man's roll number.
Hi Victor, without knowing his unit it would be impossible to find out.
The way the German forces issued their soldiers numbers is different to the British or American Armies. In the Allied armies each man had a unique serial number. No one else had that number. But in the German forces you were given your number at unit level. So you need to know his unit and number to get a name. So that number could be used by many different men, but each would be in a different unit.
The only thing that makes me think it might refer to a persons name/ number is that it is a standard private purchase clothing tag. But there is no real evidence to proove that. It could well be just some form of accountability tag. Without more info I have got a feeling that we are not going to find out it's true nature.
