On that date his unit was designated to conduct a reconnaissance mission of enemy lines which became involved in an engagement. A common front line activity and outcome.

it then goes on to say something like "defence of" *something* "200" and a place name...what's the significance of the 200s then the 500m(etres?)

Spahtrupp was a small unit, usually lead by an NCO with three to conduct tatical frontline reconaissance. What you have are the details of what was reported. Hope this helps.

Ok then dumb question, was this a 25 day patrol (as there are a lot of dittos from the 1st to the 25th) or was it a daily thing.

Also worked out that "Höhe" means "High" but that does not make a whole lot of sense in the context of this...

"4.8.1942 Defended at the height of 200 meters, Berdichino"

were they up a mountain or something?

Hohe 200 could refer to a hill, that may have been 200 meters tall or so - like "hill 200" or something like that. That's my interpretation, please correct me if I'm wrong.
