    Soldbuch and docs "Grenadier-Regiment 745", 712 ID

    Hi guys!

Just want to show a small grouping of a man I knew as an employee of an enterprise I had tho deal with in the past.

He was a young guy when he was heavily wounded in the "Battle of the Schelde - Insel Walcheren" in 1944. As a "Melder" he made his way alone from one unit to another when he was seriously hit by an exploding grenade between his spreaded legs (see "Certificate of Discharge, point II). He managed to survive, using his belt to stop the bleeding in his nearly cut off right leg until he finally had been found by comrades.

Here are his Soldbuch and award docs:

          Certificate of Discharge:

When Hammerschmid left the "Reservelazarett" in Gmunden (Upper Austria), he was nearly unable to walk. One leg had been amputated, the other was seriously wounded. He tried to reach the railway station to finally get home.

On a small bridge he met a GI who through away the rest of his cigarette before him. A lot of American soldiers (For our members: I don't think this was normal for most of them!!!) used to make themselves a joke of seeing the German prisoners who were fond of smoking and didn't have any tobacco, picking up their cigarette ends. Hammerschmid wasn't a smoker, so he ignored what the GI did. Therefore this guy hit him in the face and kicked away his crutches. After this he went away, laughing. This was the first "impression" he got from the new occupying power USA. Finally I have to state, that he told me this (and other) stories without bitterness, nonetheless I found it interesting enough, to let You know about.

          Any comments welcome,

          kind regards,

          Peter

Very interesting, also very cool that you received it direct from the soldier.

Nice set indeed. Interesting to see that there is approximately 1,5 month between the date of his wound (17th sept.) and first date entry in hospital (3rd nov.).
