New Police Soldbuch Group - translation help?

    Hello,
I just rec'd this group, and need help with the battle page. The oral history (Nephew) is that this man was wounded at Stalingrad, and returned to Germany for duty.
Can any of our German readers help? I'd appreciate it! Regards, Robert

                  Hello David,

I absolutely couldn't make this out; thanks for the help. What is a "Saüberungskämpfe"? s/f Robert

                    Cordial greetings,
The place name is Nagowo (Nagovo in English). It's a small town just off the southern shores of Lake Ilmen.

A very intersting entry in the Soldbuch on the medals page:

                      Band zur Ostmedaille

which means that he only got the RIBBON for the East Front Medal!

I have never seen such an entry before, very scarce!

                        Hi Karl,

I will show you other examples later if interested but I have seen numerous variatons for the award of the Ostmedaille....:

                        1) entry just for the medal
                        2) entry for the Band
                        3) entry for the entitlment to wear Anrecht
                        4) days counting for the medal, totalling 16!

                        /Ian

                            Saüberungskämpfe

                            Robert,

                            What is a "Saüberungskämpfe"?
mopping-up operations, in this context probably clearing an area of partisan activity.

                            Regards
                            Glenn

Robert, I don't think he got near Stalingrad. His police btl. 53 was attached to the second wave of Einsatzgruppen that operated in northern Russland after the invasion, the SS-Polizei Regiment Nord. They operated along the Baltic coast into Russia. I will check my files again on this. Your Soldbuch for him should contain entries for that unit. Any service after 1942, or did he end up back in Germany? I have an unusual desk memorial carved in wood: a police eagle surmounting a placque on which is carved "2/53 Russland 1941-42". This indicates the second company in your man's batallion. You will notice how old he was? The Reserve Police Batallions like his were constituted of these older groups of men not considered fit enough for front-line combat, but good enough for the butchery they committed, like those in the Btl 101 of Ordinary Men.
