SS Transfers Question for SS Soldbücher Collectors

    Hi Guys,

A question that has recently occurred to me is- were Waffen-SS soldiers from one named Divisioin often or even ever transferred to another Division? Certainly this happened in the Heer and Luftwaffe, but somehow I wonder if the unit loyalty and esprit de corps that seems to have been more formally part of the Waffen-SS would make interdivision transfers unlikely. Of course I'm not talking about units within, for example, the LAH, but transfers say, from the LAH to Das Reich; I'm also meaning regular soldiers, not officers transferred to head new Regiments or special instances like that.

I'd expect that SS-Soldbücher would give a good idea of the answer to this question. So, anyone who has one or more that DO show transfers from one Division to another, please say so and give the example. As usual, as many as possible would be best to give the best idea of how common or uncommon such moves were.

    Thanks.

    Hi Matt,

Just off to bed but will answer this now and show evidence tomorrow.....yes they did transfer between Divisions.

One that I have would appear he was posted out of Totenkopf for fighting and ended up in Wiking...another Hitlerjugend ended up in LAH......

However some did remain with the same Division throughout the war....obviously with some units the war situation would determine whether you rejoined your unit (after leave or convalescing for example) or were shipped off to a new front!

Remember also so replacement units formed new regiments for the new SS Divisions and units like LAH provided many battle hardened officers and NCO's to lead and train Hitlerjugend personel...

more tomorrow ...no doubt there will be more answers by then!

I agree with Ian all the way on this. Also I believe that late war there were postings to SS units from other branches of the armed services. , G.
