Erkennungsmarke crypto system for LW and FJR units

    All,
Now I'm writing small book (non-commercial, for friends and me only)about Erkennungsmarken (dog tags) in Russian. I have a lot of info, but small thing is absent.
Does anybody know how to decrypt numerical unit names on LW and FJR dog-tags? Is there any info in I-Net?
I have some decrypted info re. FJR dog-tags, but not for LW.
    Any info will be appreciated...

    Hi,

Unfortunately, to my knowledge, it isn't a code system in the sense that it can be broken. There are blocks of numbers that, for the most part at least, seem to belong to one service or another, but I don't believe this can ever be certain. A small number of people have good lists, but these were compiled over time from documentary and interview information. It required quit a lot of work on their parts to assemble these lists, so they are understandably reluctant to give the lists out in whole, but they are always very good about looking up specific numbers for interested parties. Jean-Yves Nasse on the FJ Forum here has such a list (he's helped me 6 or 7 times now) and there is one fellow (whose screen-ID escapes me a the moment) on the Feldpost and Erkennungsmarken Forum on the Militaria Fundforum website who has a LW flying unit list. Neither list is completly comprehensive, of course, as information was lost during and since the war.

      Thanks, Matt!

This is most friendly and informative reply I'd get during last 3 month (I posted the question on different forums).

      Cheers,
      RK

        Hi RK,

You're quite welcome. I've been collecting and researching Erkennungsmarken for nearly 5 years now and I flatter myself to think that I'm fairly knowledgeable- so should you ever have any questions or if there's something I can help you with, please feel free to ask either in a thread or by PM. I'm always happy to help.

        Matt
